Hey guys came acrossed a deal today and jumped on it. A 96 lsc with only 40K miles on it Bought it for 1500. The car is in brand new condition. only one problem one of the timing chains broke. internal damage unknown my question is is this an interferance motor. if not I just stole the car. even if not I have an extra head to through on it. So please give me your feed back Thx

I would say new engine. That one is 99% probably trash.40k And the timing chain went?Dont sound right

I'd be surprised if these are interference motors. Ford was well known for avoiding that design flaw.... the problem is that if the motor has been substantially over-revved you're looking at stretched bits like rod bolts etc....

But don't we have rev limiters on these cars? I'm wondering if it went into some deep water and locked/broke....

i actually would guess it is an interference engine,Ford avoided that on Timing belt engines as long as they could, but most car companies dont worry about it on chained engines, also the main reason for engines being interference is emissions,to avoid interference in an engine ,the manufacturers are not getting full efficency/reduced emissions.atleast thats what i read years ago .something about the best way is to have the valve all but touch the piston, keeping the tolerances very tight.

good luck with engine, still a nice deal, hell ,sell the hids and you almost paid for it,if you choose not to fix it.

Still if you can find a good used engine for under $1000 and if you are able to or have a good friend who can help install and engine. You still stole that car.

Make sure this was not a flood damaged car.

I had a chain on my 95 base go -but it was at low rev and and motor was t/off immediately. Actually he chain was fine, the sprocket had cracked and the chain got really loose and was rubbing the case - if I remember correctly.

No valve damage but replaced both chains, gears and sprockets.

2000 miles later the oil pan rusted out on the highway at a full run - nasty, nasty and messy. couple of 360's at 90mph... May she rest in peace...er pieces...

let me give you more info the car was babied an older guy drov it never raced it and it was only the little chain from one cam to the other not the entire timing chain

i think it is i know the 4.6 sohc deffinatlly is (learned that the hard way) and i think the dohc is more than likley interference

Well, it could be as simple as a valve job then.... if it wasn't at high RPM that chain probably just had a flawed link. Happens. I'm still not convinced these are interference motors - anybody here have direct experience?

If you know an honest machine shop they won't even charge you for the ones that aren't bent - you're WAY premature for needing the valves ground and reseated. Figure $200 for the valve work plus the cost of labor to R&R the heads....

I'd be awfully tempted to get a used set of chains - I bet those are EXPENSIVE! That's where a flood-salvage car would come in handy, yes?

well im going to pull it down and will find out i guess i have extra heads laying around seeing thiss will be our 3rd mark and i have an extra engine either way i stole it

if you PM me the VIN I can run it for you.Sounds good but if it is a flood car they stole you...

sorry for the bad news, they are interferance fit engines.if a cam goes the internal damage is usually pretty bad.ford even makes a cam lock tool to prevent the cams from being turned if you have to take the chains off.at the least a few bent valves.worst cracked pistons bent valves head and cylinder damage.

I think I remember hearing somewhere that they are interference engines. The Contour I had wasn't...I found that out the hard way.

Yes they are interference engines......

You can pick up a decent mileage engine for ~500 all day long. Check e-bay also.

If that car is in good shape in and out...............who cares???? Replace the engine with a new or rebuilt one if needed............and drive for years to come. I would! You would have $5000 in a 96 LSC with 40k miles, and a new engine to boot. Big deal! Or good deal I should say. I just bought a 93 with 68k miles and a former 96 LSC owner. If a problem developed with the engine on the 93 even, I would buy a new motor in a second for it......cuz in good shape and I paid $5k for the car as it is (and still would). POST PICS OF THE CAR HERE PLEASE!!!!!!
