Hi, I have had my 1988 LM7 for almost 2 years a very good friend gave it to me in time of need. It has about 215K on it but is still going stong. I have only had to replace the window motors up till now. I am having a problem with the brakes. The fluid resevior is full but the brake light and the ABS light is on and the brake Peddle is hard to push. At first the ABS light would go off and on. I put new pads all around about a month ago then all of these other things started happening. Can anyone give me an idea on what the problem might be before I take it in. I am a single mom and grandmother and don't know much about cars and would like to learn a little before I talke to the mechanic.

Please could you elaborate. When u say pedal is hard to push do you mean literally the pedal wont push down easily or do you mean you have to press the brake pedal hard to get brakes to work so car stops? Please describe all your symptoms so we can give you a good idea of whats going on.

I have to push really hard on the brake peddle to get the car to stop. The peddle is like al the way up when I start the car and stays up. There isn't much give in the peddle at all when I have to brake to stop, so I have to push really hard to get the car to stop. The brake fluid resevior is full to the maximum mark but the brake light and the check ABS system light stays on all of the time. At first after I had new brake pads put on the Check ABS System light would come on then go off then it just stayed on. Yesterday the Brake light came on along with the Check ABS light that is when the brake peddle got hard to push. :(

I just read through all the old threads relating to the mark vii brakes and the problem you describe sounds pretty common. The general opinion seems to be to get the fault codes pulled, followed by a fluid change, then possibly replacing the fluid pressure switch and or pump relay. Finally, the pump itself if still no good. Go to a good garage who is familiar with the mark vii system as it is different to that on most modern cars. The links above should give you a good 'heads up'
