Buzz noise on startup

Hey. My car has a new noise. It started yesterday after work. It sounds like an electric weedwacker, or someone sticking paper in a fan. It seems to be coming from the front of the trans/rear of the engine area. It was gone when I got home 1/2 hour ride. Same thing this morning. At first i though it was a cat shield, but they seem to be tight, I poked at them with a stick. I am going to put it on a lift after work.
Anyone have an idea what this might be?
Thanks.

Sounds like tiny exhaust leak, small enough that when the system heats up it closes.

I hope it's just an exhaust leak.
The VB is stock, it's a 1995. The fluid is nice and clean, and has been changed regularly for the life of the car.

I went to lunch and it didn't do it.
Tell me more about the valve body buzz please.

Thanks. I know that now, I checked through the TCCOA article.
How much of a PITA is that? I am hoping that's not the problem.

I forgot to mention, it's not a steady buzz....it's like bzzzzzz bbbbbzzzzzz bzzzzzzzzz bz bbbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz bzzzzz bzzzzzz bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Ok, I put the car on the lift. The noise is DEFINATELY inside the pan. If i punch the pan, it stops for a bit. If you touch the pan, you can feel it. One of the technicians says if he pushes on the pan, it stops. He said maybe the filter is falling off. Does this sound likely? I work in a Toyota shop, and these guys don't know alot about Fords. He wanted to drop the pan and take a look, but was worried about not having a gasket (does the pan have a built in gasket?)
Is it worth getting a filter kit and trying it? Is the dexronIII/mercon fluid ok for these cars? I know MerconV is the best, but I can't afford to do that, as I can barely afford to keep the car running as it is. I still haven't fixed last week's problem yet.
If the valve body is the problem, what does that involve? Would a junkyard sell just the valve body? I guess if this is the problem, it's a good time to do the j-mod, huh?

mine also has this noise.

glad i know now what it is. i worked on a 95 Tbird with the exact same noise.

vr4, what is the noise?

you're a ford tech, right?

i am but im not a trans tech. i do check engine lights.

the noise is just how the link posted above describes it. its a valve inside the valve body that is vibrating (its the same idea behind the vibrating driveshaft issue. it reaches a resonant frequency and starts to vibrate).

i dont know about yours but mine is not constant and it goes away when i put it in drive. this is how i know its related to the VB. im going to price out a 96 VB later today and maybe get 1 if the price is right. otherwise ill just wait for another bad 4r70w to come in and "borrow" it from there.

Go after 99 valve body if you're gonna replace it. There are many upgrades to it.

i had planned on it but i wanted to read up on it again.

now that i know what i need to do to put it in ill order it.

xw7z-7a100-ca valve body for 99 crown vic.

xl3z-7g383-ba pressure control solenoid for 5.4 (higher line pressure)

read up on tccoa on how to install the PCS and valve body.

I don't really know if mine stops when it's in drive. I will see tomorrow morning.
How much does a valve body go for?

Do you live in the mid west? I bet a cicada bug crawled into you car! Just kidding!!! I had a 1 ton Ford truck that did this also. It ended up being the exhaust, a joint between two pipes was not welded. It would only buzz when the truck had a slight twist in the body. Check that first it may save you alot of work with any luck.

Is the valve body itself repairable?

the valvebody was redesigned to fix this noise.

there is nothing anyone can do to their existing valvebody to fix it.....unless they can figure out how to redesign a vlavebody and cast a new 1.

if youve ever seen inside 1...you would understand.

I don't know much about valve bodies, or transmissions in general.

I discovered today that mine stops when I put it in drive. I had not heard the noise in a couple days, but today when I was headed to lunch I heard it, and as soon as I put it in drive it stopped.
