Hello -
I have TRYING for several weeks to determine the source of a humming/buzzing sound on my 2004 LS V8. I am about 90% sure that it started as soon as I modified my air intake.
- The first mod I did was to remove the airbox and attach a (cheap) cone filter to the original factory tube that connects to the throttle body. PLUS also I removed the huge baffles that hang off that factory tube and capped them off.
I am almost possitive that the humming buzzing sound (noticable between 35 - 70ish) started than. I am NOT talking about the really cool sound made under hard exceleration... I'm talking about a constant humm.
- The second thing I did was purchase a replacement airbox. I put that back one the car, but kept the modified factory tube. No difference at all in the humm. I could not find a replacement factory tube with the original baffles, and the dealer price was beyond rediculous.
- Finally, my CURRENT set up, is a very real KN intake system. I love that thing! Sweet sound exceleration, nice and throaty, and I don't care what anyone says... I feel the reponse improvement (seat of pants test).
And I STILL have that horrible humm/buzz sound. There is NO WAY that is normal. It's been so freaking long since this started, that is why I'm only 90% sure the sound started when I began screwing with the air flow.
If you're still with me... here is the kicker! I even tried shutting the car off and coasting down hill at 40 mph and still here the sound. There is no way it's air flow! I rotated the tires, too. This MUST be a wheel bearing, right? But the timing is to coincidental.
Is there anyone in the St. Louis area (I live in Chestefield) who has a modified LS V8 who can listen to this with me? I know it sounds wierd, but I'm going nuts with this. Or maybe just give me a call and let me know if you get what I'm saying. Because my next step is bearing replacement and I will blow a gasket if I go through all that and it still making the noise.
When, that was quite rant! Any takers? Mike Horton 314-210-7280
