cams for the most part are fairly cheap right?
ROFL! For 4v heads? Define "cheap"...
how much power will a new set of cams net?
Depends. If you just toss in the cams, not much. But... if you add a valve job, better springs, port& polish, and a good tune, you can notice a DRAMATIC gain in power; some of the guys over at the Mustang Corral usuing head jobs with cams are making over 325+ RWHP normal aspiation!
also what cams would be the best for n/a? can this be done by myself or would it cost an arm and a leg to have installed?
Someone sells a special tool to keep the timing chain in tact and you can reduce install time from 6 hours to two hours. Otherwise, you'll have to remove the timing chains; and we all know the work and time involved in that.
Keep in mind that cams may seem straight-forward in theory; but depending on the duration, grind, timing, etc., you may have to upgrade more than you bargained for.
My pal Sully from Salem, NH owns a 97 Mark VIII. He paid $1350 for special order cams. Not only did he end up swapping cams; but because of the cam profile, he also needed a 3200+ stall torque converter, better valve springs for the higher lift, 3.73 or steeper gears, and full-length headers. He wound-up spending close to $4,000 in total; but rides like hell! :gr_devil:
However, for $4,000, you need to do better than his 13.2! (n/a) For that money, he could have dropped in a good supercharger, new internals, and other uprgrades and made 13.2 look like a joke.
So in short, aks yourself how much you are willing to spend for what you get. But for a mild street cam, you won't spend THAT much, but you also won't get that much unless you have many other upgrades to compliment your new cams. So you are going to spend alot, like it or not...
Any other ???'s, don't hesitate to ask!
