well i can't really ask what is the limit to the size of cams for the 4v motor, but what i really want to know is...what is the duration and lift that will add the lopiest idle possible, and are cams really worth the effort in general...it's not about the goals i have for the car, it's the whole personality of the car that i'm after. well from what i've heard i'm not sure if it's true coming from a 5.0 background...i've been told that the mark viii motor in general was prone to spinning bearings when reved too high...i'm not really after a 1/4 mile car i'm just after a mean sounding/looking car

here's what i plan to do with my mark and what i have done already...
current mods: full exhuast, 4.10 gears, chip, trans go shift kit, 255lph fuel pump.

plans: dry kit nitrous, cams(when i figure out what a good size would be), 3600 flash/2800 foot locking stall, and possibly port and polish if it really gives me the gains i want.

but for now i just want to know about the cams

IMO, they would not be good. You dont run a blower/turbo. Also, they would be horrible for daily driving. I did a lot of research on cams a few months back. The biggest youd want would be the stage 2's. It gives you the nice sound, but with less of the drawbacks of a radical cam. Also go to the mark 8 performance section. There is a thread on cams there.

we're the third section down...and well the stage three are perfect for me...coming from what i had these cams aren't nearly as bad sounding/drivability as it would seem to be from what i had...my fox had a .544 lift to it and it loped preety hard and being a manual drivability was rough, but i liked it..my buddy pat is sitting on a .574 custom grind erson cam his sounds like a true prostreet drag car...so the stage three would be a nice cam for me...i like the rough idle and power they can have, i know cams aren't the biggest bang for the buck, but it's not about power...it's about the personality of the car for me as well...i'm not looking for 10's like i was with my stang(and i failed to reach em') but i want that feeling of a powerful ride again...

glad to know i'm not alone in the hunt for cams though.

seriously it will kill your dd potential, but if thats what your after...go for it, more power to ya.

yeah it is what i want honestly...i know it's a stupid desicsion if i was going for a DD but i'm more after a street/strip set up.

The lift of a cam has a lot less effect on idle quality than the duration and LSA (have not looked up the procedure to calculate the LSA on a DOHC motor, but it should not be too difficult). Actually, lift has almost no effect on idle.

Too much lift on the exhaust side can detrimentally affect your torque, you lose a lot of intake velocity with the high lift numbers on your exhaust.

Tell you what, find me the stock cam specs, what you want out of the engine and I will research the overlap calculations and can give you a decent starting place for new specs. PM me with that and I would be happy to help you out.

all very true. LSA is the main thing concerning idle charicteristics (SP)
