You might have thought reading that title that some sort of redneck was at a WalMart in Alabama looking to do a little possum hunting.

Well, you'd be wrong!

Our pretending Panderer-in-Chief claims the glory for this one.

Kerry's motorcade stopped at the Village Grocery Store, where he paid $140 for a hunting license he plans to use during a hunting trip and campaign stop in Youngstown this week

"Can I get me a hunting license here?" Kerry asked store owners Paul and Debra McKnight.

Kerry is such an a$$hole I can't stand it.

If Bush were to do that the anti-gun and PETA Demo's would be all over him. But of course Kerry will get a pass from them Demo monkeys.

Monstermark, don't you mean Georgia? It's Okay,That's all they talk about down here anyways, (you wouldn't be exaggerating.) Living here is like a sad combination of Andy Griffith and Blue-Collar Television, Hell, even Kerry would love it here, he'd fit right in. (Too bad I don't.)LOL.
If it's 'possums he's after we've cornered the market! I run one over on a weekly basis, funny thing, they always seem to smile at you when you're about to run them over.(Just like Kerry always smiling when death is eminent:)

Hi Monstermark

$140 for a hunting license, is that an annual thing?

Here in the UK hunting us Free, all you need is the land owners permission to shoot over his land.

The real hard bit is getting the gun to hunt with.

The $140 is probably for an annual or seasonal non-resident hunting license in Ohio. All states have different prices for resident and non-resident licenses. Plus there are other fees and "tags" for large game like deer and elk. I've got a lifetime hunting/fishing license for my home state that cost $525 a few years ago that also covers large game tags, so if you're an avid hunter here that's definitely the way to go. But if I want to hunt in another state, I've got to buy their non-resident licenses and tags which can get very expensive.

Do you guys have to buy a fishing license? The money raised here from hunting licenses and tags helps to fund each individual states' wildlife department. Do you have any comparable government agency?

Hi Kbob

Yes we do have a fishing license, I don't really do much fishing so never bother to buy one, I think it's about $25 a year to the local environment agency and yes they do use the funds to maintain the rivers.

I do enjoy shooting though, all sorts, claybusting, target shooting and hunting

Hunting breaks down like this, short version;

1st you need a firearms certificate (gun license), you get these from the police and cost $75 for five years, the police WILL NOT grant a firearms certificate if they think you are not compatent, in effect this means you WILL NOT get permission to go hunting with a centerfire rifle for at least one term of your firearms certificate (5 years), this is to gain experiance handling a rifle.

After your 1st certificate you MAY be granted permission to use a 22 rimfire for rabbits or a small calibre centerfire (22-250) for Foxes, you have to prove to the police you have safe land to shoot on and are compatent.

If you want to shoot Deer the police insist you go on a hunting course, mine cost me $525 and gain a reconised certificate, you will then be allowed a larger calibre rifle for Deer hunting, I use a .270 Sako.

Other restrictoins: Every time you want to buy another rifle you have to ask the police for permission and prove to them you have good cause to own it, they also restrict the amount of ammo you are allowed to posess.

Once you have cut through all the red tape there is no restriction to the amount of hunting you can do, I usually shoot a few hundred rabbits each year, a handful of foxes, lots of pigeons, some pheasants and I am working on getting my forth Deer this year.

You haven't seen the REAL Georgia I'm talking about, Kingsland is spitting distance from Florida. The coast(Savannah, St. Simon's Island et.al.), andAtlanta, and the Athens/Augusta areas don't really count! (If you go by those places, you'll be totally mislead, they're actually quite live!)I'm talking from Macon area to Columbus and up to Rome (and all North GA. above Atlanta/Athens!) And finally my friend, You don't live here! The folk down here will worship a tourist. Don't however, be a transplant here though. You WILL be treated as if you're the Antichrist!(Especially where you are from New York!) { Or,unless you got family here.} I grew up in San Antonio,TX and I've been referred to as that :q Yankee!(From a geographical standpoint, SA is about 200 miles closer to the equator than Mayberry (oops!) I mean Warner Robins, Ga is.
Oh yeah, I do know what you mean about Western N.Y. though, A cousin of mine married a guy from Buffalo and had her wedding there, all I'm saying is,
Is the city motto: What the F**k are you lookin' at A-hole?
There's some rough-a** people in that neck of the woods!

(However, It's all good my friend, It's just you're not seeing it at my level  ) (Peace)

Dereck, are there a lot of hunters over there, or is the hunting pressure light? Also, do you have seasons for certain game? It sounds like if you work the system and have land and/or access to land, you've got it made as far as hunting goes. By the way, didn't you guys just have some kind of an uproar over banning hunting foxes with hounds? Cheers!

Randeaux, I spent 4 months at Ft. Benning during the summer of '92. It's humid here where I'm from, but it didn't compare to there; it was very sticky. And I remember ants everywhere and a lot of sand. I didn't have much contact with the locals, but when we got the chance to listen to the radio, it seems like all they played back then was the Black Crows. I like Southern rock as much as the next man, but they didn't play anything but it seemed. It was pretty country, though.

Hi Kbob

No there are not that many hunters over here and thanks to our very restrictive gun laws less people are taking up hunting.

Yes we do have seasons for certain game:

Most ducks and Geese and partridge are September to end of January
Pheasants are October to February
Grouse, Ptarmigan, ETC are Mid August to Mid December

There are six species of Deer here 2 have no closed season you can hunt them all year round, the other 4 have various closed seasons for each sex, but there is always a couple in season at any one time.

Vermin, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, crows pigeons ETC have no closed season you can shoot as many as you like all year round :)

Hunting can be a sort of exclusive club here in the UK, once you have beaten your way past the police you then have to get to know the landowners.

Fox hunting with hounds is still legal at the moment but I don't know for how long, it seems a few tree hugging, sandle wearing, frog counting, beardy wierdy, do-gooder animal rights campaigners are doing there upmost to spoil it for those who enjoy the sport.

Derek,

We just showed our car at the Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance in Malvern, PA. US. My wife initially refused to go to a hunt club because she felt it cruel to the fox.

However, we learned that the chase is what the dogs want and the horses need. They simply muzzle the dogs for the chase. They're proud of the fact that they've had the same foxes for quite a few years.

Isn't this a reasonable compromise? I don't think you have to be a tree-hugger to see that this is not the typical slippery slope.

If the fox population can be well managed and maintained through hunting, then I say "let loose the hounds!!" I had a big mouthed beagle once, I used to love to hear him when he got on the trail of something.

Hi Barry2952

I do not do fox hunting with hounds, I shoot them ;) and I have no problem with other people hunting them any way they want to.

Yes I do think the hounds being muzzled would be a good compromise, unfortunatley the people that go hunting with hounds don't see it like that, they are thier own worst enemy, it has been suggested in our parliment as a comprimise to an outright ban.

The people that hunt are mostly the more well off amognst us (it isn't cheap to maintain horses and hounds) and they tend to look down on us lesser mortals, something happens to them when they get on a horse.

Kbob: Fox population could never be maintained with hounds, it would only escalate as they only kill a handfull each year, one man with a rifle can kill more in a day.

I meant it as more of a piece than the whole enchilada. We hunt deer here with bow, rifle, and muzzle-loader. But by far the biggest number of deer taken is with rifle.

AH,Columbus I know it well, You do have a point, the countryside is awesome, but you hit the nail on the head, except all they play here in the Macon area is The Allman Brothers our local legends, forget about Little Richard who was raised here and was one of the pioneers of rock-n-roll, Otis Redding is the proverbial bone thrown-in around here,he has a bridge named after him. I don't want to get into the nauseating subject of Middle-Georgia politics anymore than I am already, However I guarantee, if y'all'd stick around awhile you'd understand.(KBOB,you got it right!)

In the summer of '92 I think everywhere was obsessed in the Black Crowes though, I was living in San Antonio at that time and that was all they played, but I can see your point, I think they were from Columbus,Ga though.
Remedy still makes me nauseated whenever I hear it on the radio.
'92 wasn't the best of years.
