97 Lincoln starts up then cuts off but not all the time. When it cuts I have to turn it back on and gas it up then put it in reverse, back out of a spot put in drive and she's fine. I don't get it

Does it shut off right after it starts? I would guess a sticky IAC valve.

Yep, just go get ya a new IAC valve (w/new gasket), or your can try cleaning it (don't rip gasket). Shouldn't happen again.

You can use brake or carb cleaner. It can only be cleaned if their is carbon build up hindering its operation. It will be easier to just change it out. Its right in front of the throttle body if you standing in front of the car. Has a wire running to the top of it, looks like a little cylinder with 2 small bolts holding it in. On my 02 i had to take the black plastic cover off (over the throttle linkage) 1 bolt, then undo 1 bolt from the throttle linkage and losen the other. Don't get all superman when putting those bolts back in either.
