Every Gen II I see (both 97 and 98) has the CD changer on the drivers side, mounted horizontally, and covered by the trunk liner.

EXCEPT mine. It is on the passenger size, and mounted vertically. It works, but I haven't used a CD in 15 years. It has the previous owners CD's in it (middle eastern pop, whohoo). I haven't removed it yet because I use it to anchor things in the trunk with a bungee cord, but want to remove it and add rings for nets and bungee cords.

Why the differences? Did these cars come with standard premium and optional systems, or dealer add on changers? I want to install a new head unit, or a very simple MP3/SD card/bluetooth module in place of the factory head unit. I currently use a tape adapter to a bluetooth receiver and Pandora on my phone (or audiobooks). I would like to retain the factory amp if I have more than 4 speakers, don't have the time to redo the entire system yet.

Most of the CD players I've seen are on the drivers side, mounted horizontal. I've seen some on the right side vertically. They made radios with just cassette, single CD, 10 CD w/ cassette. and I heard of a 6 CD. One of my MK's has a DVD in it. Came with the car, but I think it has orginal speakers, and amp. Sounds real good. Behind the taillights, in the trunk there could be 2 black buttons that a cargo net hooks onto.

Yup, I have the button heads on the studs for the cargo net, and a cargo net, but I anchor things like a tool kit, battery pack to the changer. I keep a small toolkit always, but also make frequent trips to the you pull it yard so keep a slightly larger tool bag and plastic tote for parts.

Mine has the factory cd player, along with the trunk mounted (passenger side), mounted vertically, 6cd changer. you mean they all didn't come on the drivers side?

is the 10 disc factory, and the 6 disc a dealer add on?
i've never seen any mention of the 6 disc in the ford brochures.

That seems like the most logical, that the passenger side 6 disc changer is a dealer add on.

I wish I could find the order guide pdf files for the Mark VIIIs. I have them for every year Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, etc, but I didn't save the one for my 97 Cougar or 97 Mark VIII. It would be a great reference, maybe less so for Mark VIII because there wasn't a plethora of models or optional equipment like the Panthers, but still would be nice.

I ask because I am contemplating hacking up the CD inputs to the radio and adding an aux/audio in type thing, so that when I select CD as long as there is a CD with track/tracks "playing" I can get the audio from my aux in. That would require I keep the changer in the trunk.

On my 97, I have in dash CD player. On the others (98,97 & 93), I have the 10 disk changer on the driver side.

So green machine, you have a cd changer and a in dash CD player?

The Sony 10 disc changers were from the factory, the Clarion 6 disc changers were dealer add ons. I had the Sony's in my gen 1's (except my parted out black winter car but I added one to it) and I have the Clarion's in my Gen 2's. The Gen 2 Sony's have a different connector than the Gen 1's also.

My Clarion's quit working, I've got a spare Gen 2 Sony that I will be putting in my 97 when I get some time. I have to change the wiring though, as the Clarion wiring is different. :(
For now, I borrowed a stock in dash CD player from a friend.:)
