is it an easy job? could i do it in my own garage? it looks easy enough, but i wanted to check before i got in over my head....

Piece of cake.

Disconnect battery, remove the belt, unbolt the bolts that hold the bracket on top of the alternator (under the plug wires), nut that holds on the power wire, remove electrical connector and the two bolts on the bottom of the alternator and it's out.

Be VERY careful not to cross-thread the bottom bolts when you put the new one in

That was almost a perfect set of directions....except the part where you remove the bottom 2 bolts....you only hafta loosen them up a bit, but do not hafta remove them since the bottom tabs on the alternators are slotted. :D

I figured that out the hard way, but it still was pretty easy. My friend and I pulled my alternator in a parking lot in about 10 mins, then went got a new one and put the new one in in about 5 mins.

oniy thing not mentioned is to charge the battery before starting. saves the diods from having to work hard on a cold start and possiblly friing them. jd

Really? The one that was in there wasn't, and I have a brand new alternator sitting here that isn't slotted either. Ya lucky SOB lol

Slots would be nice, but none of mine ever had them.

Wow, I guess there is a first for everything. That is the first alt I have seen that was not slotted. Everyone that has been on my cars, or I have purchased have had slots on the bottom.....I guess I have been a lucky SOB.....lol :D

Late model alts had the slots....... early models on the other hand, did not.

Most important tip, is to make sure you disconnect the negative cable from the battery. If you remove the alt charge wire, and let it touch the engine, sparks will fly.

Slotted

The 96 and newer model alternators that I have seen are all slotted. The 95 and older ones are not. Rebuilds are mixed as the cases can be used for all years of Mark VIII's

What needs to be done to install a 96 130amp alternator in a 93-95?

I just replaced mine Saturday. It's super easy.

If you buy one from Partsamerica/Autozone, get an alternator listed for the 2000 Continental. It's a 6G 130 amp model that fits perfectly. If you tell them it's for a Mark VIII, they'll sell you a 3G 120 amp that costs 40-50 bucks more.

3G alternators are not as good as the 6G variant.

Make sure you get the one with the lifetime warranty (I've heard the reman alternators can crap out).

The one I bought was a Palladium for $138 plus core.

Oh, I think this is my first post.

Hi.

2000 continental 251 USD
1994 mark viii - 361 USD

Call Max, and see how much it will cost to ship it to you. 1-800-866-1520 ext. 236 :shifty:

i called max, he gave me his price list but the 2000 Continental alternator isn't in stock - he would have to sniff around for one. His core charge was 60 USD.

I will probably go down to autozone when i am in MA this week and pickup the one mentioned here, the Palladium.
