is it an easy job? could i do it in my own garage? it looks easy enough, but i wanted to check before i got in over my head....

If you buy one from Partsamerica/Autozone, get an alternator listed for the 2000 Continental. It's a 6G 130 amp model that fits perfectly. If you tell them it's for a Mark VIII, they'll sell you a 3G 120 amp that costs 40-50 bucks more.
3G alternators are not as good as the 6G variant.
Make sure you get the one with the lifetime warranty (I've heard the reman alternators can crap out).
The one I bought was a Palladium for $138 plus core.
