Changing Headlight Bulbs

What an embarasing question! LOL!

My owners manual says to go to the dealer to change the bulbs in the headlight modules on my 06 LS. What a crock!

No room to get a hand behind the light modules so tryed to remove the headlight housing. Found the two that are on towards the inside of the grill and the middle of the module easily enough. However, there is a third fastening that appears tucked under the fender or perhaps is an access through the fender well.

How exactly do you remove the &%$^%$& headlights to get to the bulbs! :D
 
You dont need to dealership to change out a bulb.3 screws holding it. One to the left of it, one in the center above it and one to the right of it.You have to remove the long plastic cover that gows from headlight to headlight and also the smaller plastic cover below the hood release handle to get to the third screw. You will need an extension to reach the screw that is to the outside of the headlight.

It was the screw towards the fender side of your picture that I was missing.

Can you believe it though that the owners manual said to go to the dealer! That blew me away! Easily 3 out of 4 times I have ever blown out a head or tail light, I have been on a road trip miles from anywhere and it drives me nuts not to be self suffecient on something so basic.

Depends entirely on if you go with standard or premium level bulbs. Standard halogens are probably towards $15 a pair. Premium bulbs are generally in the mid-$40 a pair. PIAA bulbs are towards $70 a pair and are both over priced and over hyped IMHO.

I like to change bulbs in pairs. Halogens in particular age over time and the quantiy of light produces will diminish. For other bulbs like turn, tail, etc. I replace in pairs because I figger if one side went out the other side probably will soon as well.
 
I've got PIAA headlight bulbs in my LS. I don't really care for them cuz I can hardly see except for when I'm on a road with very little lighting, which is hardly ever...which is y I'm upgradin to HID's
 
I just replaced mine with Sylvania Silverstar Ultra, highs, Sylvania Silverstar, low, and Nokya Hyper Yellow, fog for about $75, all in pairs, all premium. Bought them from Amazon, very happy with all. Watch the clip on the center 8mm bolt, it wants to jump, run away, and hide in the engine compartment. The bulbs and socket needs some finesse to get out of housing. The panel for bulb access in the housing takes a T20 for the screws.
 
I've been using standard Sylvania SilverStar bulbs for quite awhile and they are a real nice bulb. Switched from SilverStar to Hella bulbs on my truck and actully think the Hella perform a bit better than standard SilverStar bulbs, more light on the road.

One real positive thing about SilverStar bulbs is it is very easy to find replacements. Most every autoparts store and Wally World carry them.
 
I loved my silverstars, but they never lasted for me. I would end up replacing them every 5-6 months...at 30$ a pair, that gets expensive, and annoying.

I just switched to HID's last night.

i had the exact same problem, every 6 months on the dot, might as well mark it on your calendar. I also had the same solution. lol

When I changed my original OEM high beam were Silverstars, and the OEM low beam were Phillip's, all were 6 years old and not burned out. Time will tell how long the new one's will last. :)
 
There nice real bright. Is there a blub that are bright without converting to hid's, And if so which one would you recomended. Just a note like the ones when they first came out on the bmw's i think where people were stealing the cars just to get the blubs. Oh sorry sounds like it is silverstars

Don't confuse light out put with color. 1st gen and 2nd gen use different bulbs.
 
They look like a blub on steroids. also kinda look like the blubs they use in garage now that take about ten to warm up.

No mention in the information or on another form from its members that use this bulb about "warm up".
 
No i was trying to say the one that look like that in a garage for light have to warm up before use , sorry not saying for a car. Although they do look like they would work for the one you put for a car i will have to look into them and see if they could be bought else somewhere up here and see how much.
