for my 2000 v6, you lift up the decorative black plastic engine cover, and 3 are on the right side of the manifold, easy access...just a bolt holding down each coil pack, lift them up and the spark plugs are down in there.

the other 3 are hard to get to. you have to lift up the manifold to get to them!!! (not too easy, as one of the bolts are way in the lower back part hard to reach)

love the way these LS's are engineered so ANTI-DIY!!!! they want you to take it into the dealership

are you replacing the coil packs/boots too?

good luck!!

I sent him the instructions from the manual - the v6 looks like a big job - the v8 not so much (but have to work in cramped spaces)

Just did my V6 man what a freakin nightmare. If I have it long enough to do another one I think it will go a bit faster but you are right about the out of reach parts. That heat shielf for the fuel line was a pain in the :q and that egr transducer on the far back corner what a treat :Bang .

Must be that time of year! It was about 60 or so here, so I decided to do the plugs on the Sport. Whoa...those plugs were the originals (87k Miles) and tough to get out. I thought they were stripped at first! They looked like hell and two of the wells had oil in them.

The cool thing was, once I finished the job, the car ran exactly the same. :Bang Looking at the old plugs, you wouldn't think it could run! It looks like someone had replaced the VC gaskets at one time as there is some orange Permatex by the front cover. The Permatex was in the right location, but I have never seen orange work worth a crap. One of the coils was replaced already also. It was the same one I replaced in my wifes car. 2nd from the back on the passenger side (not sure what cyl # that is). I cleaned the wells and will check again in 2 weeks in hopes they will be dry.

This was my second time doing a tune-up in an LS v8. It took me just over 3 hours. I went really slow pulling out the old plugs. I did clean everything while I was at it.

cylinder numbering for future reference.

Rear of engine
4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5
Front of engine

1,2,3,4 are on the Right hand side and 5,6,7,8 are on the left hand side.

Man you must be about ready for a drive by on the Wixom plant after all you have had to do to both cars. Plus having the car run the same afterwards... I cannot imagine how disheartening that must be.

Did you replace any of the coils?

Thanks for the info. I am going to order a coil and do some swapping next weekend. I don't have a bad misfire like I did on my wife's car, so I thought a tune-up would do it. I do have a funky vibration starting at around 45 when the car is cold. It doesn't seem to do it when it is warm. I was hoping that it would be tune-up related, but it could be anything.

Maybe I'll pay a special visit somewhere when I visit my family in Michigan. :)

I went ahead and replaced the coils on the RH on my V6 becasue they are such a pain to get to and I think the misfire I was has cleaned up a lot but there must be at least one bad coil on the LH side. So I am going to do like you are... buy one and move it around until I find the the offending component. No sense in spending 120 bux on three coils if I do not have to. The tune up on mine worked wonders for my LS though. I replaced the VC gaskets as well becasue i found brunt oil around the wells of the plugs.

The oil on both sides seemed to be focused more on the #3 and #6 cylinders at the rear of the engine.

Wow. So it happens on the V6 too?? That's not even near the same engine design, is it??

The oil I had on the driver's side was a front plug. I would have never thought that. On my wife's car, the problems were toward the rear like you experienced. If I do find oil in that #5 cylinder again, I am going to say it is because the mechanic screwed it up.

yeah they are equines of a different hue, these two engines. Dont come down on your mechanic to hard... he has done so much for you already. :)

I have 2 V6 LSes. One has ~55K miles, the other ~100K. no oil leakage at all. The two engines are very different. The V6 design goes back to at least the 1996 Sable/Taurus. The leaky gaskets was an issue on, IIRC, the 2000 & 2001 V8's. There was a redesign for the 2002, IIRC.

I wouldn't do that. I am the only mechanic I work with!
