I am taking the lincoln to CA speedway next weekend for its first quarter mile run. I am just curious to see what it will do. I am looking to do some cheap mods to help my ET that can be performed within the week. I just finished welding up the straight pipes late last night and it sounds awsome! I used the factory tips too so it looks stock at a glance.

excuse the low quality pic...

Now what else can I do that will not cost alot and can be done quickly. I was going to do a cone K&N filter, but after I pulled apart the air cleaner assembly I see that it is not really possible to just put one on. I am thinking of swiss cheesing the air box... Can you guys throw out ideas of what I can do for cheap that will get me a faster ET? and what should I expect to run in a stock Mark VIII with 103k miles?

Take out all excess weight like spare and jack, run with 1/4 tank of premium gas, set front tires to 40-45psi, leave rears at about 30psi. Stage shallow for best ET.

so what ET should I expect to see out of a virtually stock 97 LSC? mid 15's?

when i would race, i would always make sure my engine and gas were as cool as possible, and i would remove all excess weight. borrow some slicks, especially if the track sucks. low priced mods, under 200. plugs, wires (8mm or better), high output coil, premium gas with some octane booster, cool engine, exhaust, not sure how your engine is setup, but electric fan vs. clutch fan, i even went without power steering a couple of times, only alt. and water pump. dont be afraid to max out your rpms, unless your motor is weak, seen many races lost because of shifting too soon. more money, more power, after you replace a few you get good and fast at it. for me, it was cam, heads, intake, shift kit, carb or injectors, computer programmer, stall converter, and a few others. all depends on your current setup.

I've never driven a well tuned stock Mark VIII that wasn't capable of high 14's stock. Look at what my 98 LSC runs all it had was chip, mufflers and K&N. And I've only run it once at the track it has more in it... I drove my dad's complete bone stock 96 Mark VIII to a 14.93 at 95.79 MPH in drive as well.

Be happy with 15.3 or better. I tried the ol disconnecting the sway bar, it didnt seem to do anything for me. You could cut up your airbox. Im not sure what else you can do on a 2nd gen to make it faster for cheap though.

Hmmm...alright. What kind of chips are availible for the mark, and how much do they run? The car runs fine, I think I am going to change the oil and tranny fluid and filter before I go out there (about that time anyways) So aside from that maybe drop the pressure in the rear tires, bump the pressure in the front, take all the extra crap out, and run 1/4 tank of premium maybe with some octane booster? What about o/d off vs o/d on? Manual shifting or let the car shift when it's read? Any other tips that might help?

Put 5W-20 in for Oil. I think Ford came out with a TSB on that. Thinner oil maybe .005 more HP LOL!

O/D off.

Let the car shift.

There are more ideas here when I went 2 weeks ago:

I get my best times manually shifting it. It takes some practice to know when to shift to avoid hitting the rev limiter though.

-shift manually (on the way to the track do a couple 1-2 runs to try and find the perfect shift.

-My best run yet was with no air filter.

- you could try the ram air mod, but its kinda undecided weather that helps or not.

well the track gets pretty crowded, I will most likely get 3-4 runs in for the whole day. At least that's how it was when I took my old truck there. I guess I will try letting the car shift and manually shifting.

3.73 trac-lok rearend
Baumman Shift Kit Stage 3
SCT Chip
LMS MAF intake
LMS XX Exhaust
180 degree T-Stat
275 tires (in back only for track)
MMX Driveshaft from Denny's
Cobra Bilsteins

Can't think of anything else right now but there are some other small things LOL

thanks for the tips, what mods do you have on your car to run a 14.2?

Nice time Brent, it could have been closer to 14.0 flat if you had gotten 4.10 gears though... stay up.

Yeah, I'm sure you are right - I do use the car as a daily driver and my commute is 90 miles round trip on the highway so I decided to compromise.

Looking at your post, you reminded me of something I left out - Walbro 255. I knew I forgot something.
