Check engine temp/ engine power down

Check engine temp came on, then the power down. Turned the car off and wife said car was making a loud grinding noise. When I got there, she had the car turned back on, everything sounded ok but there was a clicking sound. Drives ok now. But we just drive down the road to the house. What is wrong? Any help would be great. THanks.

V8? V6? What Year?

What happened is that your cars computer detected an overheating situation. Might have been a false alert, might have been a real overheating situation. Either way, the cars computer is designed to shut down 1/2 the cylinders temporarily to attempt to prevent permanent overheating engine damage.

Sounds like you arent too familiar with cars. With that in mind, best to take it in.
