So yesterday, a guy has his 2004 Mazda RX-8 towed into the shop because his car shut off on him while driving down the interstate. So the mechanics proceded to check fuel....etc. What they came up with was shocking. This guy apparently wasn't very rigid about checking his oil........ever. The car had 20,000 miles and had its oil changed twice. As if that wasn't bad enough, when they drained the oil out of the engine, there was about 3/4 quart that drained out. Needless to say, the estimate was well over $10,000 and NOT covered under warranty because of his lax maintence. In the manual, it states to check your oil every time you fill up your tank (especially on the rotary engines). So as the summer rolls around and everyone is planning on taking long trips, this is just a friendly reminder to check your oil or end up like this guy. Feel free to laugh at this guy.........i know i did.

Yeah, I have a friend with one of those RX-8s. He says they burn oil much quicker than any car he has ever owned.

rotory engine or not checking oil is a pretty simple thing to do. Too bad for him.

Rotor engines are really bad at this. My good friend had a 94 RX7 and said it blew thru oil as fast as it did gas. I have rotor compressors here at my machine shop and they use oil like crazy also. But note to self check that oil every 1000 miles is my saying!

Thats what i like about the LS. I hit the staTus button, It tells me just how much oil life i have left. when it gets down to about 5%, i call my Lincoln dealer, schedule an appointment. simple. I love my LS

The fact that they burn oil is by design, it is a necessary evil of the rotary engine. !0 dollars to a doughnut this was the guys first RX.

Also, please do not confuse oil life with potential oil consumption. Check the oil regularly as the oil life tells you nothing about loss.

I was about to say, oil level has nothing to do with the oil status thing on the msg center. It's just there to remind you of a oil change every 5000 miles. next time you change your oil, write down/remember what mileage you're at. by the time the oil status is at 0% you will be right at 5K driven.
