need some thoughts on how difficult it is to replace the idle air control valve on a Gen one-which one of those bad boys is it, I cannot find anything on it, in alldata (subscription), do I have to replace it? I've read elsewhere that cleaning the throttlebody can fix this problem (High idle, happened all of a sudden)-anyone have any ideas? thanks

Imagine the worst possible spot next to the firewall and its right there! Actually it on the backside of the throttle body, on the intake. Kind of on the pass side.

I did mine when I pulled my tranny it made it easier but still a bitch. You might want to buy a 12 pack before you start cause you will need it.

Funny thing is... I remember alldata having a pretty decent picture of its location? try looking up something on the throttle body itself or go into Locations.

this is my spare motor, here is a few pics from the veiw of the heater core

thanks, Markviiiedrea, that picture is great-I already found it by diagram on alldata, and checked it out-I is gonna take a CASE of beer to do that, what a joke-I just removed the plug to it, it idles around 500 rpm even in drive with the AC on, so it'll stay that way for now-I am in the Glenside Pa area, if anyone out there in the area feels ambitious and wants to get paid to hate this car and replace the IAC, let me know-I'm not afraid of work, but am the other side of 50 and fresh off an occipital stroke, so my vision is not so great-I found the OBD II connector (imagine puttting it over the LEFT knee) so I can clean any annoying cel as it occurs for now. thanks, guys

That sure is a retarded place for it! Why did they ever put the throttle body there to start with???

solved, for now

I disconnected the battery (both posts) and clamped them together for half an hour, then connected the electrical connection to the IAC, hooked up the battery and hooked up the air tube, started it up-it's fixed, idles like it did before-
I remembered last night having the same problem with my 93 years ago (my wife reminded me that this seemed to have happened before) and I went on line, and found that toyota owners have the same problems with 98-99 camrys, and this is one of the fixes-it makes the computer re-establish the settings for the IAC so that it recalibrates. Because of the 'overspeed' MIL it sets, it means the IAC is working, just the ECM for some reason has lost it's ability to calibrate it properly. This car sits alot (I drove it less than 5000 miles a year, usually not driving it at all from late November to late March), so I need to clean the battery posts and charge the battery prior to running it on a regular basis when it starts to get warm again. Whatever, I bought some seafoam and ran it through the PCV while running, put some in the gas tank, cleaned the battery posts and terminals, and will charge the batery, and carry a 13mm and 8mm wrench so that next time it happens, I'll try this again. If it doesn't work, I'll remove the intake tube (no engine cover) and disconnect the IAC to get it home, then I'll ponder again what it must be like to remove that IAC with the engine in the bay...what a joke. thanks for the suggestions and especially the photos.
