Codes, Help Me Please

So my car has been stuttering later so I checked the coil for oil and nothing. So I'm asking if anyone know if I can buy a scanner for the codes or a way I can check the code myself or is it a dealer item only. i used to check them on my 98 mustang Gt so I was just wondering.

Is it throwing a CEL(check engine light)? If sotake your car to a local auto center and have them check the codes with a OBD II scanner.. That should let you know whats going on....

No chech engine light but the I can't get the trany to shift down with the shifter(non sst) it well go to 3 third ans so on and back but not 4th. Th tranny will shift through four but cannot get it on the indicator.
