So the compass on my 98 tells me that i'm going south( south east, sometimes east) and only that never north or west. Is this a calibration issue or is something toast in the computer.

I would try recalibrating it first. Mine read wrong when I got it, after recalibration it is golden.

Do you have a sub woofer in the rear? If it's the same as a Gen I compass the compass can be affected by the magnet of the sub woofer.

Otherwise have fun driving in circles ... LOL

Well Ill be...... I always wondered why Sapperfires blue cars compass never worked right. Forgot all about the first gens having the sensor in the rear.

you would have to have radioactive subwoofers to affect the compass in a gen 2 since its on the rear view mirror. open the owners manual and go to compass settings, it will tell you what to push on the message display keys to clear the compass, do it in a parking lot because you will have to circle slow to calibrate.

I took my whole entire tray out of the 94 to get the sub box in and the compass module was all out of whack anyway from being thrown behind the carpet. The best way to fix it is to just know where you're going lol. I never used mine and in the 95, it's built into the mirror but I still don't use it. I like seeing my MPG average more.

You have a very smart car.Move south ,imeadiately.Just not too far south.

Its telling you that you are going down hill. Mine say your going the wrong way dumbass.

Mine does that when I turn the rear window defrost on, lol... (I think it's east on mine actually but similar none the less ;) )

i know this is an old thread but i just got my windows tinted and now the compass only points south its stuck on south. At first it started switching from north to north east back and forth and it kept on saying check compass but now its just stuck on south. How do i recalibrate the compass?

Do you have the manual for your car? If so, the answer is in there. It requires driving in circles in a large parking lot very slowly and something before that but that compass IMO is just something taking up space on the message center. I would prefer it to read out my water temp or trans fluid temp, etc...

Anyway, check in the manual. It's in there.

No problem. I have a 93, 94, 95 manual but I couldn't say the instructions are the same between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 and wouldn't want to give you wrong info but I do know for the Gen 1, you do have to do something that resets the compass, maybe disconnecting the battery  and then drive in circles very slowly and when I say slow, I mean slow. Give the compass time to keep up with your movement. I think it required 3 to 5 rounds and then it should be set but don't hold me to that. I have always just disconnected mine and the 95 has it on the mirror and works fine but I never use it for anything. Just like the auto dim switch on my mirror, I never turn that thing on either but I do have tint so maybe that's the reason.

I can scan my Gen 1 manual if anyone wants. There are 5 pages on setting the compass.

i have the 97 manual i just have to wait to get off of work to do it....ill do it tonight on my way home ill find a parking lot or somewhere with enough space to do the full 360.

It's not a life-changing event. It takes two minutes to complete and meanwhile a bunch of people get to laugh at the drunk guy in the parking lot with his Mark VIII. LOL

I actually had that happen when I first got the 94. It was dark and a few guys were laughing and saying "wtf is he doing over there" but it seems like I had to make 2 to 3 rounds but I think my first one or two were because I was going too fast for it to comprehend my direction.
