Section 04-01: Suspension and Wheel Hubs, Front 1996 Mark VIII Workshop Manual

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arm, Lower

Removal

NOTE: If front suspension lower arm (3079) is replaced, front wheel alignment must be checked.

Raise vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 .

Remove tire and wheel.

Loosen lower front suspension lower arm ball joint nut three or four turns.

CAUTION: Use extreme care to avoid damage to ball joint boot seal. If seal is damaged, replace ball joint assembly or front suspension lower arm assembly.

Rap spindle to separate front suspension lower arm ball joint (3050). Leave nut attached.

Support spindle by wire or other means to prevent excessive sagging of front suspension arm bushing joint (3085).

Mark position of camber adjustment cam.

CAUTION: Do not hold front suspension lower arm strut (3468) or damage surface in area shown.

Remove rubber bumper from front suspension lower arm strut, if equipped. Remove nut retaining front suspension lower arm strut to front suspension lower arm and discard. Hold strut by flats with wrench while turning nut.

Remove front spring and shock bolt and nut.

Remove pivot (camber) bolt and nut.

Remove nut at front suspension lower arm ball joint and remove front suspension lower arm.

Installation

CAUTION: Use extreme care to avoid damage to ball joint boot seal. If seal is damaged replace ball joint assembly or front suspension lower arm assembly.

Position front suspension lower arm in vehicle. Loosely install pivot (camber) bolt and new nut.

Install tension strut front suspension washer (3A141) and front suspension lower arm strut bushings (3A140) and loosely install front suspension lower arm strut to front suspension arm attaching nut.

Loosely install new front suspension lower arm ball joint nut.

Install lower front spring and shock bolt and nut. Do not tighten at this time.

Tighten front suspension lower arm ball joint nut to 113-153 Nm (83-113 lb-ft).

CAUTION: Do not hold front suspension lower arm strut or damage surface in area shown.

Tighten front suspension lower arm strut to front suspension lower arm nut to 120-160 Nm (89-118 lb-ft). Install rubber bumper onto front suspension lower arm strut.

Remove wire or other support holding spindle.

Install tire and wheel assembly. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).

Lower vehicle.

CAUTION: To prevent front suspension lower arm strut bushing wind-up, lower shock absorber nut must be tightened with vehicle weight on wheels.

Position vehicle on "drive-on" hoist or alignment rack. Push down on front of vehicle and release to neutralize suspension. Tighten lower shock absorber nut to 160-220 Nm (118-162 lb-ft).

Align camber marks at pivot bolt. Tighten nut to 110-155 Nm (82-114 lb-ft). Do not use power tools; use torque wrench.

Check wheel alignment. Refer to Section 04-00 .
