My 01 LS8 is going in for some warranty work on the cooling system on Tuesday morning, and I am just posting, my issue to see if anyone else has had this...

Every so often (3 times in the month, I have had the car) the fan would either turn off or not start on ignition, causing the engine temperature to spike and overheat to where the coolant vents steam out of the tank. After it cools down, and I manually give the fan a twist, it has no problems till the next time it happenes.

It doesn't look like it's stuck or getting hung up somehow...so I have no idea what it could be.

What is the deal with the cooling fan resivoir as well, last 2 shops (non-dealer) I have been to, had no idea what the system was. Resivior looks to be getting contaminated somehow with coolant/water....ATF fluid looks milky.

Thanks

Dave

sounds like somebody put coolant in your fan resevoir. i've seen that once before on this board. really that car has no business going anywhere but the dealer. anyways the pump might now failing due to the contamination. dealer may have to replace the pump and may not cover it under warranty.

No coolant was put in there, as the last time this happened it was flushed and refilled with clean fluid, now it's milky again. Which pump is this by the way?

Thanks

Dave

Suprised no one else had any comments... Well, as an update, the car did not make it to the shop before spewing coolant/water out of the car with a hell of alot of steam off the engine, overflowing milky cooling fan resivoir. Luckily this happened when I was pulling into work today.

SHop appointemnet tomorrow, and being towed there tonite. NO smoke out the rear tails, possible head problem?

Thanks

I'll post the findings.

the hydralic fan pump is not connected to the coolant system in any manner (as far as I know) - it is simply a pump driven off the belt, the ATF is in a closed loop system - from the pump to the fan and back.

One common failure is the little 'cheap' anchor brackets break and the hose will eventually break at the connector due to the weight of the hanging hose. The leads to ATF leaking out and the fan stopping - which does not sound like your problem.

I don't know of any way for coolant to get into the ATF.

Well the "explosion" was due to an Upper Radiator Hose exploding, I couldn't tell in the dark garage, but it was obvious when I opened the hod the next morning. Car is in the shop now, still don't know what caused the original overheating problem....

I'll keep it updated...

Thanks Quick for the Response.

The issue was the pump failed as well as the fan itself casuing the overheating which ultimately lead to the busting of the upper radiator hose and causing all my problems.

I will post what parts exactly were replaced when I get my reciept and my car back tomorrow or wednesday.

Thanks

Dave

That still doesn't address why there was coolant in your hydraulic fan assy and what they are doing to fix that problem. Any news on that?

I am not sure that it was coolant inside the fan resivoiur(sp?). I will not have the car back until tomorrow morning, then I will know exactly what was done when I speak to the service reps. Since it was all under warranty, I didn't really ask too many questions, because I honestly don't care how much it costs to replace. As soon as I know I will post it up, prolly tomorrow night when I get to work round this time...
