i have a quick question. im new to the world of lincolns. my girlfriend has an 04 lincoln ls v8 ultimate with 160k on it, and we recently started having cooling issues. we replaced the thermostat and housing, water inlet tube, upper radiator hose, intake gaskets, and misc. cooling hoses. car leaks until you bleed the system. is dry until u shut it off then you can hear it lose pressure and start leaking again. what might it be? weve heard some things about the degas bottle but arent sure, running out of options here. thanks

Search this site. There's a lot about cooling system problems here.

You'd done most of what I would recommend, and I commend you for that.
You definitely do want to go ahead and replace the degas bottle. I promise it will have cracks. Use the OEM part, not the aftermarket Doorman one.

Did you replace the plastic riser pipe that connects between the waterpump and the thermostat assembly? I'm assuming that you did because why else would you have pulled the intake and replaced its gaskets?

Where is the leak coming from? Do you see coolant on top of the front of the engine? If so, it might be the O-ring that goes on the end of that riser pipe. Ford sent the wrong (was almost correct) size to me the last time.

If you are just seeing coolant near the front driver's wheel, then it's the degas bottle for sure.

we replaced the water pipe due to it blowing up (literally) and it has been fine till this last week. it mainly leaks above the bellhousing and it was fine after i bled it. then when we got home and shut it off, i could hear it losing pressure and it started to leak out the back again right above the bellhousing. it doesnt leak out of the front anymore. when we replaced the upper radiator hose i didnt replaced the hose that went down. i replaced that and it seemed to stop up front

A coolant leak up front (especially the TB heater hose) can drain out only at the back of the engine (it can spray/run under the intake manifold). Do take a look at the riser pipe for any signs of coolant at its base. If there are, it's probably the o-ring. I've been chasing this problem on my 04, and the correct size (53mm) o-rings are supposed to arrive today. The ones that I got from Ford were labeled 53, but measured at 55 mm.

Anyway, the degas bottle remains a really good suspect for you too.

would that gasket on the water inlet pipe cause it to lose pressure and leak? its fine when its running, just loses pressure and leaks when you shut it off

and where is the best place to get an oem bottle, besides ford. they want $200+ for one

It could, that's pretty close to what it did to me.

your talking about the gasket right in between the thermostat housing and the water inlet pipe. i replaced that. its dry right there. seems to be something else that might be leaking. only other thing i can think it might be is the pipe off of the water inlet pipe that bolts to the valley under the intake. everything behind the water inlet pipe is white, like dry coolant, but no wetness.

#23 (9N499) is exactly the thing that you need to replace. The plastic rots. The o-ring in red on the attached diagram is the one I had trouble with.

where can i get that 9n499 and that hr1 gasket. is that just from ford? so its probably that and i degas bottle that are causing the leaks? or do u think that that 9n499 is the problem and could it be whats leaking onto the bell housing and causing our leak in the back?

Either way, trust me, you need the degas bottle too. Yes, both only from Ford, FordPartsGiant, Tasca, or similar.

replace all these parts cuz they are due.
degas bottle trust me I had 3 bad doormans that equals the 1 oem and at the end I had to get OEM and problem went away.
get 8276 aswell it sits right ontop of the engine and it will crack
get 9n499 should of done it when you did the whole thermostat housing.
get 8548c should be done aswell.
get 18472 and if your ac is not working do the DCCV aswell if you have not done so.
also the lower radiator hose 8286a if not done soo

you may think is overkill but with this car is needed badly. if you do all of this then you will be good for another 100k

it was those parts. cant find a 53mm gasket. all that i can find with the water outlet is a 54mm. im hoping that should work. but that was where it was leaking from. and yes, ford seems to be the best place to get them. the 9n499 is like $40 at ford and the gasket is $6. weve replaced the other parts before the degas bottle. pulled it and its not cracked, but will be getting one soon. lower radiator hose is still good.

... lower radiator hose is still good.

The point is that all of the plastic ages at about the same rate. The experience here has been that once one piece goes, all of the rest will too, within a month or so.

I ordered an O-ring from The O-ring Store. 5.7mm x 52.3mm Buna-N 70 I'll find out how it does this weekend.

i ordered the hr1, ford part number; w707299-s300, 53mm from fordpartsoem.com. its $8.14

Yes, but you get four of them for that price. I hope you have better luck than I did this last time. (They were the correct size the time before.)

well, pulled that water outlet off today and found out, like all the old plastic cooling system pieces, that it had blown the seam out of the part, all the way up to the gasket. part should be here in a few days. to everyone with an ls with original cooling parts, replace asap. all of ours seemed to break right at the seams and are now good
