- Engine Cooling

The cooling system components include:
  • block heater (optional)
  • cylinder head temperature sensor
  • fan blade, fan motor and fan shroud assembly
  • radiator
  • pressure relief cap
  • degas bottle
  • radiator draincock
  • water pump
  • oil cooler (optional)
  • water thermostat

The water thermostat:
  • controls the engine coolant temperature.
  • allows quicker engine warm-up.

The degas bottle:
  • provides a location for system fill.
  • contains coolant expansion and system pressurization.
  • provides air separation during operation.
  • replenishes the engine coolant to the system.

The fan blade draws air through the radiator to help cool the engine coolant.

The fan motor:
  • operates only when the engine is running.
  • will not operate when the engine is off.

The Engine Coolant flows:
  • from the lower radiator hose to the water pump.
  • from the water pump to the engine block and the cylinder heads.
A closed water thermostat returns the engine coolant to the water pump.
An open water thermostat allows the engine coolant to flow to the radiator.

Unsatisfactory coolant materials:
  • Alcohol-type antifreeze does not provide adequate water pump lubrication.
    • has lower boiling point
    • reduced antifreeze protection
  • Alkaline brine solutions will cause serious engine cooling system damage.

The Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor provides a signal to the temperature gauge.
  • will invoke Fail-Safe cooling.

The optional Block Heater:
  • electrical heating element is installed in the block cooling jacket.
    • uses a standard 110V (220V in Europe) electrical supply
  • keeps the engine coolant warm during cold weather.

The Auxiliary Coolant Flow Pump (3.9L only):
  • provides heater coolant flow boost at low RPM's.
  • has a secondary function of providing engine-off cooling.

The Dual Coolant Control Valve:

All Plastic cooling system parts should be replaced all at once !!!

~ listing only the major plastic cooling system parts which should be focused on.

# 2 - XW4Z-8260-BA - Upper Radiator Hose
# 3 - XW4Z-8A520-AF - Coolant Outlet Pipe
# 12 - 5W4Z-8A080-AA - Degas Bottle
# 15 - XW4Z-8592-AA - Thermostat Housing << see note here
# 19 - 1W4Z-8286-CA - Lower Radiator Hose (with Oil Cooler)
# 19 - 1W4Z-8286-DA - Lower Radiator Hose (without Oil Cooler)

Items listed below, should really be replaced at the same time when completing the cooling system rebuild. They age and deteriorate at the same rate as the rest of the system. They may be good now but tend to go around the same time the other plastics begin to fail. While rebuilding the cooling system, lines will be off and coolant out anyhow, so the timing is now.

# 1 - 18495 - Dual Coolant Control Valve ( DCCV )

CAUTION: both GEN I & II repair manuals show DCCV as P/N 18495
~ one would want to be very careful ordering P/N 18495

Rigs,
Thanks for putting this together.

I lost the degas bottle a few years ago and have been expecting the next failure to occur soon. Have had her 15 years with 98k mi. May do a proactive overhaul before winter gets here.

- Thermostat Housing

tstat2.jpg

The OEM Thermostat housing complete unit with gaskets consists on several individual parts and are yet plastics again. There is a much simpler cost effective solution for the 1st GEN LS V8.

Re&Re - Jag Aluminum Upgraded Thermostat housing - GEN 1 V8

tstat2.jpg

ÜRO Parts NCE2247ADKIT
- Jaguar S Type Aluminum Thermostat Housing Kit (upgrade direct fit 1st GEN LS)

tstat1.jpg

This complete kit comes with the outlet, fill cap & gaskets for less money then OEM.
It's a reliable direct fit, no nonsense all Aluminum Thermostat housing.

The Ford Thermostat P/N XW4Z-8575-CA itself is not included.

Jaguar Thermostat Housing comes with new rubber O-rings, use those provided.
Use Lincoln LS OEM thermostat not the Jaguar thermostat for that housing. (due to different release pressures)

Holy #$*@ this is what I’m looking for!!!!
Thanks Rigs as usual you went above and beyond

Rigs you are a god send can you recommend a few options for the water pump ordered 1 from auto zone but you know how they are with high school kids working there

Also very dumb question here how can I tell if I have a gen 1 or gen 2 also the part for the water pump is a duralast awp 9354

Rigs doesn't seem to be here often.

My experiences with water pumps cause me to say that you only want the OEM Motorcraft pump.

1st gen LSes are model year 2000 to 2002
2nd gen LSes are model year 2003 to 2006. There were over 500 changes between the two generations. As one example, the 2nd gen V8 cooling system is very different from the 1st gen. Have a look at this:
GenII LS8 Cooling System Overhaul

If choosing a water pump please Note: The Motorcraft have plastic propellers where many aftermarket and ACDelco have the metal propellers which will more than likely outlast the car
