On a 2002 Lincoln LS V6...just curious, why does the coolant need to be drained? And is this if one is replacing both rows of COPS or just when one removes the manifold. Thanks for all the info here.

Well, for one thing coolant runs through the throttle body (to heat it), and the throttle body is removed with the upper half of the intake manifold (to get to the other three coils and plugs).

I've done it a few times without draining the coolant.

Joegr is correct, you only need to clamp the one on the throttle body. I've changed the cops twice on my 01v6, never drained the fluid.
