I know a lot of members here do online banking and purchases so I wanted to ask if they have came across this trend lately and warn those who haven't.

While in Atlantic City recently with my wife and a few of her friends from work one her friends had a purchase denied on her bank card. Thinking it was just the moronic Mc Donalds worker she just let it slide and decided to pay with cash. Next we went to some outlets to shop. Same thing had happened so she called her bank. After about 10 minutes and 100 questions verifying her identity she was told that there was a major breach in the system and they had to terminate most of the banks members bank cards and send out new ones.

Yesterday in the mail my wife and I got a letter from our Credit Union stating that they basically had the same type of incident happen so now we have to wait for a new card to come in the mail.

Apparently this is becoming a trend seeing how it was such a large scale in two different bank companies and they both needed to give just about every customer new cards.

Watch yourself! There is something going on and its apparently a huge scam on a very large national scale so at this point it can happen to anyone.

Just thought I would let some of you be aware if you aren't already.

I check my account online everyday... two to three times a day making sure nothing goofy shows up. What more can you really do?

I know you cant do much but its good to be aware. I really wont do anything online. I try my best to find a number and call a order in or keep banking records in a portfolio.

I dont know if I ever once looked into online banking.

I mean if the bank needs to give you a new card that cant be helped but if you do any online transactions and banking that just gives more odds of being one of those victims.

All it takes is one transaction and some peoples life savings are gone.

Your best bet if you do any online shopping is to do it with a Credit card not your bank or debit card. Most credit cards have zero fraud liability.

I have been a victim of online fraud. It was 2 minor charges for just under $50 each but who knows how far it could have gone had I not contacted CapitalOne and worked it out. I noticed it 2 days after the first transaction... traced it through the merchant (a phone card purchase made overseas) and finally called CapitalOne. I was issued a new card, new online account information, and I didnt pay a cent on the deal. They advised me to watch my credit profile to see if there were any other breaches or accounts opened in my name.

What's the alternative? carry your paycheck around as cash? I dont think so.

To the OP: I was also notified by another creditor of a recent breach in their security. Later that week I saw a news report on the matter. It was some 3rd party system that processes the transactions for the bank... their system was hacked. No personal information was breached but lots of account numbers were made available. Cant really do much with just a number.

I got a letter from my Credit Union saying the same thing, the new cards are in the mail and my old ones will be deactivated within 20 days of the letter.

I'd like to know which online retailer it was though. My letter says nothing about who it was that got comprised.

The best thing you can do is like KK said, keep a real close eye on everything. I'm on my account several times a day checking it out. If I can't tell what the purchase is, call the bank.

I had a friend who just got arrested for, among other things, credit card fraud. Since we're on that topic, you can never be too careful, and you really never know who might try to rip you off, it might even be someone you've known for years.

My point is prevention in general.

I know lots of you guys have reasons to utilize the online banking features and order what you need online. I just dont justify it. If I have been doing without most of my life I can keep doing without, and Im no old folk that dont believe in banks or computers Im only 28.
Think about what other personal information the bank has about you. Now if they can get in and get something like credit card numbers whos to say they cant get your personal information. And the banks have lots of personal information on you.

Trust me, I know exactly what you are talking about. It dont have to be credit cards either. Cable bills, phone bills, electric bills and even magazine subscriptions are all things someone can screw you on if they know even the slightest bit of your personal info.

I had someone withdraw 800 from a vegas ATM, while I was in Iraq, the bank said the scums make duplicate cards.

The bank already has all the info.
If they get hacked your going to get screwed.
I use M & I, I wouldnt trust a small bank or credit union to be secure enough to online bank.
I don't think my online banking puts me at a higher risk.
You just have to watch what your doing.
Keep your computer up to date and don't expose your passwords, leave them laying around your hard drive.
I have been doing it for years and love it...I would never go back.

They have upgraded security in the last few years.
Its a multi-step to login.

My credit card lets me create a one time use number with a given dollar amount to do online transactions.
Its the only way to go.

I know I can be hacked anytime, but that holds true if I online bank or not.

Lifelock or other similar type of co for $10-15 a month makes it almost impossable for identity theft.Credit card co's. are begging to be ripped of,they tell retail stores not to ask for ID.
Back a couple of months I got a call from American Expres, sir did you charge $2.00 at Jiffy lube,me No ,her then I guess you didnt buy a digital camera for $1500?, Me, No ,her, ok sir we will remove the charges,Me ,Great ,but I think I Know who used my card #,thats ok sir we will handle it.WTF they didnt want any info or leads to who stole my cc # I am pretty sure it was an x girlfriend who I let stay over for a few days before going into re-hab...she never made, it think she sold the camera for drugs.

They didn't investigate, BOA made me fill out a police report, and wait 30 days before they refunded any fees that came from my account going into the negative, they refunded the 800, the next day. Someone told me that the people who commit credit card scams hardly ever get caught, is this true?

It was almost certainly not an online retailer; most of them just pass the transaction off to a payment card processor, so there's nothing to get from them in regards to your credit card info. According to the latest alert from ComputerWorld, a big payment processor got hit a few weeks ago, and another just got hit:
Just weeks after Heartland breach, another payment processor said to be hit
Visa, MasterCard notify banks of breach at unidentified company; third incident involving payment processors since December

The online banking for my company doesn't show the account numbers... all you can do is transfer from account to account, and look at balances.
