So how the hell do you change the CV shaft on a FWD car. My fiancée had her CV shaft replaced earlier this year when her ball joint blew out, now it's making a horrifying grinding, clunking noise. I pulled the tire off and was able to slide the CV shaft in and out and around (making a clunking noise) wit little effort. It's a 1995 Tolieta Corolla

I don't remember there being any real trick to it when I did it on a Tercel/Paseo.
Best advice, go poke around one of the Corolla message boards, you can probably even find a service manual for download there.

remove wheel.
undo the nut holding the shaft into the hub.
undo either the ball joint to spindle or strut to spindle, whichever looks easiest.
lean spindle way out, slide axle shaft through to inside.
inside hub is a little different, depending on make/year. most are locked by a small lock ring inside, which should release with a little prying and pulling. one subaru i did once had roll pins through the inner hub.
reverse procedure to install.

so it wasn't the CV joint. But the only thing that kept the CV joint attached to the hub was the cotter pin, I was able to remove the castle nut without using a wrench. Now I need to get the bearing pressed out

You better take the hub to a shop and expect to pay around $200 I did mine and it was hard to press out and the bearing alone was around $80, there is also some seals you need to buy.

The best way to get the axle out is to separate the ball joint. You can pry the axle out of the trans with a pry bar, it just snaps in with a spring ring (do not pull on the axle or you will ruin it). Its not that difficult to do and the nut torque is like 140 ft lbs the best I can remember. I have Toyota software I could look it up on if you need to know.

Thanks any way but I got it all figured out. I took the spindle out and brought it to a shop got a new bearing and hub pressed all for about $50 yest that's parts and labor.
I can't wait for that car to die
