Greetings,

I'm having a problem with my 95'. I know a little about auto mechanics but this has me stumped. I'm driving down the road and the damn thing just dies. It's happened twice in the past ten days. Here's what happens; the engine will start to sputter, of all things the antilock brake warning light comes on, all analog gauges go dead, speedometer, tach, everything. Pushing the accelerator has no effect. Cannot increase speed. Then the engine quits. Only way to restart it is with a jump. After it's started all the radio stations have to be reset. So when the engine dies there's obviously nothing much left in the battery. Power windows will go up and down but very slowly. Turning the key has no effect. Engine won't even turn over. Originally I though the battery was bad. But it ran fine for ten days before it happened again. One thing I did notice that happened both times, there was a loud "click" coming from under the hood just before the engine turned over and started. Twice now I've heard that click, and twice I've had this problem. Can't put this all together. Dead analog gauges, antilock brake warning light, and the click when the car is first started. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the alternator, but do yourself a favor and clean your battery terminals and the battery ground. That click can happen when the battery is dead or if you just have a bad connection.

sounds like your alternator is going bad and probably will need to be replaced.

:I It is the Alternator!! Happend to both of my Mark VIIIs

Easy fix if you can turn a wrench. Should only cost you the price of the alternator.

You get them for $65 on eBay. I purchased one for my 93 on eBay and another for a friend of mine. They are good. One came dead but the guy paid for return shipping and sent a replacement next day.

I agree with you guys a 100% about it being the alternator, but I believe the culprit to the alternator dieing here could be the crappy stock battery terminals. How many miles are on the car/ what year? Moral of the story being; change out the horrible ford terminals for something a little beefier.

dont even waste a single second of your time buying a cheap-o. These cars are notorious for for being finicky about charging systems. The cheap, remaned units dont work...you'll end up doing the same job 2 or 3 times, to save a buck.

Do yourself a favor...buy the FORD unit now. Do it once, do it right. Get a Cobra/130 amp unit, replace your cheesy battery terminal/connectors with REAL units, and be done. it's a one-time fix, if done right the first time.
