Do you think that the American citizens are becoming too dependent on the federal government?

I guess not too many people are voting on this.

Personally I dont believe in hand outs. I dont want to depend on someone giving me something I dont deserve.

I have never depended on govt hand outs and never will. The closest I came was WIC, is that considered welfare? I was a Sgt. at the time, but according to the govt I rated to get the assistance from WIC due to my low income. Did I depend on it? No. I would have been fine with out it, but if they are gonna give it to me due to my income, or lack there of, I will take it. Mainly because I feel todays military doesnt get paid enough for the job they do or the service they provide.

My father taught me since I was a little boy you dont get something for nothing. I would do whatever it takes to take care of my family, even if that meant working at 3 fast food joints.

Speaking for my taxes; I agree to support those who are showing effort, to make a future as a dependable, positive contributor to society. It takes time in the field, whichever field of achievement one chooses, to build skills and/or a reputation to negotiate a decent wage or a "good living." From what I read, you had gotten a "hand up" as opposed to a "hand out."

I don't understand your point.
Are you saying that the federal government should be responsible for support a person until they develop their career? All careers?

So a guy who drives a bus should have to subsidize a guy who is a studying to become a doctor or a broker? A guy who is digging ditches should subsidize another person who is getting their grad degree?

I'm not sure if I was following your logic on that.

Pardon the abbreviated response.

The logic for me:

I believe the Federal Government is not responsible for individuals as a welfare platform. However it is to focus on International borders, mail, interstate commerce, ie: one currency for the USA. Standard definition for Federal Gov’t by Dictionary.

I believe that individuals are responsible to feed and clothe themselves and pursue a career of their choosing.

I believe in supporting my local community and in that environment, I get to choose who and where to give. However, in current affairs, the Fed has avenues for students to receive assistance, (my taxes).

Ideally, what my thoughts would look like is shown in the old T.V. show, Northern Exposure. The town pays for an underprivileged student’s schooling, in exchange for thier services as an indentured servant, Town Doctor.

Laborer paying for a Doctor scenario: Yes, as the student receives Federal Funding, the student studies, graduates as a Medical Doctor and becomes a supporting member of society supporting the Laborer and the community around them.
This concept can seem to get a little blurred if you consider taxes taken from California and given to someone in Maine. However, who is to say that the very same Californian may someday be in Maine and receive treatment from the same kid? (Kid= student to Doc. That he/she helped pay for.) Or, creates cures for current and future dis-ease.

I sure you can appreciate that what I have expressed here is largely conceptual. I do like to devil in the details.

I think that is a brilliant application of "aid." It's local based, it's service oriented, it's competitive, and there's nothing "entitlement" about it.

Aauh! That’s were I was going next, competition. Thank you for the key words I was searching for earlier.

I often imagine what it would look like if students or other recipients of social welfare went through a bi-annual review. Support checks based on an individual's successful results.
