Officials Freak After Archives Data Is Lost A terabyte can't be that big, can it?

You'll never believe what I found at the gym today!

A few pieces of important data from the Clinton administration are missing after the National Archives apparently lost a computer hard drive.

What's missing?

Oh, just some Secret Service and White House operating procedures.

And some Social Security numbers and addresses -- including the SSN of one of former VP Al Gore's three daughters.

And some logs of White House events, social gatherings and political records.

In all, that little missing hard drive contains about one terabyte of data -- the equivalent amount of information that can be found in millions of books, according to the Washington Post.

Oops.

The Post reported that the FBI is conducting a criminal investigation into the missing data. It vanished from the Archives facility in College Park between October and March, according to the Post.

[An] aide, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said the hard drive was left on a shelf and unused for an uncertain period of time. Later, the drive was found to be missing.

Committee staff members were told that there is a backup copy of all the information but that Archives officials have only just begun to learn what was on the drive.

[Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.),] said he would have the FBI and inspector general brief committee members so they can "begin to understand the magnitude of the security breach and all of the steps being taken to recover the lost information."

You know things are bad when one official calls the breach in security both "outrageous" and "egregious" in back-to-back sentences in the Post.

So who has the hard drive? About 100 "badge-holders" had access to the area where it was last seen. Janitors, visitors, interns and others also pass through the area. Oh, and it's also a place where Archives workers pass through on their way to the bathroom, according to the Post.

So, you know, pretty much anyone.

Didn't this happen back in... 06 or 07? Someone in the bush admin lost a laptop that had a lot of classified data/info on it?

Also, smh...at having to have someone tell you how much data a terabyte holds. It's 2009 people

I think the question is...

which is the lesser evil; Big Government or Big Business?

When there is excessive corruption in the private sector, you get Enron, possible recessions, and a lot of major inconvenience to a large number of people.

When there is excessive corruption in government, you get all the same problems that the private sector can create and more; specifically, the taking away of rights, injustice, waste on a scale that the private sector could never touch, Waco, Ruby Ridge, wars (and all the negative things associated with them) and depressions, among many other things. I am sure that others can add to the list...

It should also be pointed out that a lot of those negative effects from the private sector can also usually be tied to the government as well, while the reverse is not usually true.

Are you making a point or just trying to increase your post count?
You've stumped me on that.

Is government inefficient and often times incompetent, regardless the who holds the Presidency, yes. It's a fundamental trait of government. Why you're linking this story with any President baffles me though.

I was just saying this stuff has happened before, and will probably happen again.

In the realm of conspiracy theories...

Well at least nobody in the Bush admin ever revealed the location of the secret Presidential bunker.

So you expect those kinds of screw ups, in this case dealing with highly sensitive information, from government

That is all. We suck at this stuff lol
So you don't have much faith in government?

Me neither.

Oh...that Joe Biden!! ;) ;) **wink** nudge** He's a rascal!!

Actually, you can't be too hard on him.. he was probably just drunk.

Me neither.

There's actually a web site dedicated to lost or leaked secret gov't documents. It mostly has to do with wars and people, not chemical or alien etc etc. I think i have a link to it.

But, to answer your question, i dont. I really dont :(

I'll take Darth Vader over drunk and stupid any day.

At least Cheney knows what it's like to shoot a man. Biden's a queer in comparison. He couldn't even stand up to Palin.
