I promise to nicer if you promise to be smarter.
Why the Power Steering High Pressure line runs all the way to the passenger side of the car before doubling back on itself and going into the R&P assembly?

I would imagine a nice, short 8"-9" line should be sufficient, no?

Thanks for your input.

Thank you for the quick replies and input, gentlemen.

IIRC, the PS system has a cooler installed from the factory. I could be wrong, ofcourse.

TM, Space saving reservoir??? I don't get it. The ID size of the line is not sufficient enough to hold a lot of Power steering volum in it to act as some sort of a reservoir. Or am I wrong..?

I think Ford had two reasons for it. One, make it more expensive and Two
Make it more difficult to replace when it leaks!!!

i think torquemonkey and grifter are right just a little more fluid means cooler fluid and it also helps cool it ive replaced them on f-150's that looped like that with aftermarket ones that didnt and it all worked fine

The fttings are 16mm swivel o-ringed, both at the pump and at the rack.

Did you get that hose already ? They should use 6AN for the pressure side.

Well Sir.. we cheated a bit.

I took the OEM line to a local oilfield rubber and hose supply shop. The guy took the OEM ends with the fittings, cut them off, and spliced them into some same ID size high pressure rubber hydraulic hose. We'll see how that works being shorter.

I used an aftermarket one for $30. The fittings at the rack were rusted to $#!t so I had to get those at the dealer..cost me about $60. The return line is obsolete so I made one.

I found this in my searchings. Look at note #9. It labels the long double back over itself part as the "power steering fluid cooler".

The page is out of a Mustang manual. I'm sure the principal is the same.

[Hey, the edit key is working, now]

yup. thats 1 of the ways ford cools the PS fluid.

(the other is a very small finned cooler. kinda like a mini trans cooler.)

Yes, that there be a power steering cooler. It isn't quite as nice as some of Ford's other designs though. Must be before they had the cooling revolution. Now all of their cars have a very nice finned piece that seems to work very very well.

yes they do.

ill be putting 1 on my mark shortly.

I saw a wrecked police interceptor at the wrecking yard the other day and it used the radiator coolant as a power steering cooler, the p/s lines hooked up to an aluminum peice which was inline with the lower radiator hose.

Engineering, wow.

Yeah, I saw it and wondered if I should grab it, but I figured that an finned type cooler would be better. Kinda like a tiny trans cooler, but who knows. They must have used it for a reason I guess.
