Want to start doing the suspension soon. I'm reading the ls does not use struts. If that's the case what does it use? It it shocks? I also want to do eibachs. I have an 04 v8 sport.

It has upper control arms, so no struts. It uses coil over shocks. These look a lot like struts, but the function is not exactly the same. A lot of places call them struts anyhow.

Like Joe said, Coil over Shocks.

So think of it like there are three separate functions involved: Upper control arm, dampening suspension movement, and applying spring-force against the body. A shock only dampens suspension movement, a coil over shock dampens and applies spring force to the body, and a strut does all three functions.

Hopefully that makes sense to you. It's the short version of explaining why the terms are different in a way you can understand. If you want the long version of what the three separate functions I mentioned are then google is your friend. There is tons of info out there.

sounds about right for parts to a car that cost $40k+...

I'm sure if you looked around you could probably get 4 shocks for under that, however they have been hard to get at times...

And your old worn out ones are probably better than most of the cheap aftermarket shocks for the LS.

Going OEM (assuming that you can find some that are really in-stock):
Front shocks : $131 x 2
Rear shocks : $114 x 2
$490

I doubt you need springs, but...
Front springs: $68 x 2
Rear springs: $154 x 2
$444

$934

I think the springs are harder to find now but the shocks should be available.

Last I heard/read is the springs are not available and even though some dealers show stock, a physical check shows they don't have them.

Wow thats out of my budget right now. Thats plus labor a little too much. I found OEM motorcraft coilovers might do those at $500.

Struts also maintain the location of some suspension components. On vehicles without coil overs that use shocks, they can technically roll without them whereas strutted vehicles can not.

Struts limit the degrees of freedom. Shocks in a double wishbone suspension only position the links along a path defined by other components. Take a strut out of a MacPherson setup and the wheel is free to tilt (the camber direction), giving it 2 degrees of freedom: up/down and camber tilt. Take out our shock and the car just drops as low as it can go, but the wheel still only has 1 degree of freedom: up/down.
