I'm ready for my next mod. I've decided on 4.11's. I have read before that people have to replace the drive shaft. Is this true? If so, why? Also where is the best place to by my gears and what else should I do while I'm in there? I appreciate any help with this.

Yes it's true.

The long driveshaft, combined with thin walled tubing, adn the double joint in the 94 and newer shaft, causes them to "whip" off of it's center. With bigger gears your spinning the DS faster for a given speed, and this increases the problem.

This is what we use to eleminate the problem. I have one in both of my marks, and will buy another one if needed. WELL worth the money.

If your not good with rear gears I would take it to a shop that's got a good reputation in your town. Alot needs to be done to get the pinion depth set correctly. If not, youll get rear end whine, other noises, and potentially shorter gear life.

While your in there, I would get a set of poly bushings for the diff case mount. They will decrease deflection under load, and hold the case in better. Also depending on the ammount of miles, I would throw half shafts in. I just had to put new ones on my 94, and could'nt believe the difference.

I had a vibration that I could'nt track down, and it would come and go with no known reason. It got REALLY bad out on the interstate, to the point I was getting worried about it, so I went into Napa and ordered both sides. All vibration is gone, and the rear end feels better under a hard 1st gear pull.

every mark Iv'e come into contact with has needed CV joints around 120-130K miles. my expierence tho.

Fair enough.

If your doing gears, don't forget the trac-loc.

Anyone want to give me a ruff estament on how much for 4.10 gears, driveshaft, and trac-lock would all cost and if you want to guess the cost to install them??

Total, could go over $1,000.

Limi-slip: $250 new from FRPP
Gears: $190
Driveshaft: $550
Gear oil: $10
Friction Modifyer: $5
Install: Between $200-$400.

If you go over 4.30+, you'll require additional parts.

Thank you for all the input. I was thinking (Guessing) around $700.00. IF YOUR GOING TO DO IT, DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. What is the limited slip exactly? I'm not sure I truly know and what does FRPP stand for?

Thanks again for all the info.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You'll want to have this done by experienced professionals. Otherwise, you'll suffer gear whine noises, grinding, accelerated wear, etc.

Limited slip = Ford's version of "Posi". Both wheels drive when accelerating as opposed to "Open" differential, in which only one wheel drives the car...

Ford Racing Performance Parts, the offical Ford performance store. (www.fordracingperformanceparts.com)

both wheels drive the car with an open diff. The difference between an open diff and an lsd is that in an open diff, if one wheel encounters less traction it will spin independent of the other wheel, while an lsd never allows a wheel to spin independent of the other.
