First, it's the DCCV, not DVVC. Dual Coolant Control Valve
It controls the flow of coolant through the dual heater core. It does not control the flow through the radiator.
Just like the old days with no electronics, turning the heater on will help remove heat from the engine and may keep it from overheating if the cooling system is marginal in some way.
You could have reduced airflow through the radiator due to a fan problem or to dirt build up (probably between the radiator and the condenser).
You could have reduced coolant flow through the radiator due to gunked up coolant, corroded radiator tubes, a failing water pump, or air trapped in the system.
You could have reduced cooling system capacity due to failure to pressurize because of one or more leaks.
Search for overheating because I think almost every cause has been covered more than once here.
