My conti and the mark VIII don't have strong e-brakes. My Town car e-brakes are strong, meaning they lock the brakes when i press on it. is there a way to tighten up the e-brakes?

I never use it. If I am jacking the front up the tranny being in Park does enough for me, if I am jacking the rear, I just hope the garage floor is flat enough.

I always thought that the rear calipers had a ratcheting mechinisim in them that automaticly adjusted the e brake. I wish I could help you more. As far as the other guy never using the e brake (why not) its hard on the trans when you do that. you should always set the e brake first and then put it in park.

I thought that when you apply the E brake, that adjusts the brake too, like on a 77 up Trans Am with 4 wheel discs....

From the manual...

"Cable Adjustment

Release the parking brake control, using the parking brake release handle.

WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the luggage compartment. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

Raise and support the vehicle.

Pull the parking brake cable adjuster clip downward. The tensioner spring will take up the cable slack and preload the cables.

Push up on the bottom of the clip to lock adjustment. If the clip does not slide up, move the assembly slightly to align the closest groove on the parking brake cable adjuster rod with the clip.

NOTE: If new cables are installed, allow 20 minutes prior to releasing the parking brake control.

Apply the parking brake control with 556 N (125 lb) foot-pedal effort and release using the parking brake release handle.

Pull the parking brake cable adjuster clip downward. The tensioner spring will take up the cable slack and preload the cables.

Push up on the bottom of the clip to lock adjustment. If the clip does not slide up, move the assembly slightly to align the closest groove on the parking brake cable adjuster rod with the clip."

This is primarily taking slack from the cables which stretch with age and use. There is a limited travel distance in the brake control. Basically when the cables stretch, the e-brake actuator at the rear caliper assembly does not travel sufficently. Taking up the slack causes the actuator to travel further thus setting the brakes tighter. I have also noticed the cable adjuster spring sometimes looses strength with age(particularly with sticky cables) and may need some coaxing during cable adjustment.

Hope this helps. :)
