Engine Additives?

Do any of you use fuel or oil additives in your Mark VIIs or VIIIs.

Are there any that are worth the extra expence?

Are there any that are necessary?

Are there any that are harmful?

What the scoop on this stuff there sure are a lot of things on the shelf.
 
Seafoam, and Lucas. Seafoam is a great product, and I have never heard anyone claim to have had any negative effects from it. I also used Lucas transmission additive about 8 months ago. My tranmission has 135K on it, and has never been serviced. :rolleyes: It had a slight slip to it with high load/low rpm, and the Lucas helped out a lot. I don't know if I would add it to a well maintained transmission, but I would highly recommend it for an old one that may not survive a fluid change.

I use SeaFoam for the induction and for fuel treatment. Chevron Techron is also a proven fuel treatment.

Lucas does have good products to restore additive levels and heal leaking seals. The only Lucas product I have used on my Mark is the power steering fluid, but both their engine oil additive and transmission fluid additive are good.

I personally have been sold on Muscle Products MT-10 additive. I use it in the engine oil, transmission fluid and differential gear oil. "MT" stands for Metal Treatment. We use it at work under very extreme conditions and I have seen its benefits hands on. Prior to it, we used STP oil treatment with some success, but the MT-10 wins hands down. Most people have never heard of it.

I also use Water Wetter in the coolant, but I don't know if it helps significantly.
 
INTERESTING that you should ask..... I was just about to post on this.

I went on a trip to Dubuque, Iowa and just got back. 160mi each way.

On the way there, I pulled 21.1 avg mpg.

Right before I left Dubuque, I filled my tank and added 8oz of Lucas fuel treatment. On the ride back I scored 26.9 avg mpg. Just about a 6 mpg difference. I also stopped three times on the way back, and the way there was a straight shot. SO I had a lil in-town driving on the trip back which hurt my mileage a lil. So to me this stuff is great.

I also use Lucas oil treatment and lucas tranny treatment. The tranny treatment, I use about every 10k, changing my fluid every 20k. This stuff takes the hard shifiting away immediately, and keeps me smooth for about 10k.

I generally consider additives to be nothing more then gimmicks.....I started using the lucas products on Geno's recommendation. As far as im concerned, its great stuff -
 
get a cone filter and straight pipes you will get 31 mpg on the highway

Oh sure you get with in 45 miles of me and don't even wave LOL.

Are most if these products (Lucus, Seafoam etc...) easy to find at most automotive stores?

Actually I drove around looking for you the whole time! :) Actually, I did mention you to my GF saying that your not far away.

Yes, Lucas is pretty much available at any auto parts store, certainly the bigger chains lke autozone and pep boys. Seafoam is also, but ive noticed that every place doesnt carry it.
 
only store that sells seafoam here is a boat shop none of the other stores seem to have it

if I recall the instructions correctly, you can add it anytime.............

BEST thing is to change tranny fluid every 20k and add lucas then, using Mercon V

Would that cause the tranny to be over filled, and isn't over filling the tranny bad?

I change my fluid every 20k, adding one bottle of lucas to the process, then 10k later I add an additional bottle. Seems to keep the shifting smooth. Not bad for a 120k tranny. IM not fooling myself, I know ill be replacing my tranny before too long, this just delays that.

... and if it delays it long enough, you don't have to worry about it, right? :tongue:

Actually that's probably not a bad strategy as it enhances the additive levels initially and boosts the additive levels when you add it later.
 
Yes, if it delays long enough, I'll sell the Mark and it'll be someone elses concern!
