Well I cant take this crap anymore..I have a ticking every morning during cold start but goes away after a few minutes and cars warmed up. Took it to the dealer and they told me it was the lifters, Ive had a couple of suggestions; Mystery Oil,Detergant Oil Cleaner,Switch to synthetic..What would you guys recommend doing to get into the lifters possible to lube things up and stop this dreaded ticking...

Replace the lifters?

I had the same problem on my GMC. No snake oil's gonna fix a bad lifter. Not that I know of anyway.

I had the same problem on my 1st of my 3 LS's It was on my 02 V6. That wont go away without just plain replacing it. I know its frustrating

I have a 02 V6 and it has the same ticking. There are a ton of cars that have noisy lifters. I cant believe that "a few minutes" of ticking is so demanding of a repair. Turn your radio up for crying out loud.

I don't know if this fixes it, but another website I visit swears by using a diesel rated oil such as Chevron Delvac or Shell Rotella to clean out an engine that is varnished/sludgy. It has a strong detergent package that cleans gradually and does not have questionable issues like many of the cleaners.

The diesel rated oils typically meet or exceed the gas engine spec oils. The disadvantage may be that a 5W20 or even 5W30 rated oil hard to find. The additive package is very good but not geared to gas so there may be issues with long term deposits on smog components in my opinion, which is not terribly educated.

If you were desperate to not change lifters, I would probably try a diesel oil for one oil change cycle rather than using an engine flush or essentially oil thinners like kerosene, ATF etc.

Just my Guess, Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
