98 Mark VIII started acting sluggish and would die. When you start it back up it would go fine until the next time. Eventually becoming more frequent. Dealer says it is the "engine coils"?? I've never heard this term... an $800 job and 4-5 days. Sounds like they tear into the engine.

Any advice on this one?? HELP!

Thanks

engine coils are extremely easy to replace, I would check the boot on the coil first. Basically when you look at the engine you see a small cover with two bolts over the valve covers. Under that cover with the two bolts are 4 coils (one for each cylinder). They just pop out. When you pull them out, slightly bend the rubber boot on each to see if they are cracked and replace as needed. If its the coil you just unplug the harness going to it and replace it. Real easy job. I'd get the codes ran to see exactly which cylinder is mis-firing.

Engine coils

Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately it is my sister's car and she is in LA and I'm in DC... If the job is so easy why are they quoting her 4-5 days. I think they said only 5 hrs of labor so that makes no sense. What do they do? I'm pretty much a car guy, albeit not a mechanic, but I've never heard of this part...

Thanks

The coils are p/n 4L7Z-12029-AA and they list for $64.29 each and cost you $39.06 each and include the boot. The boot can be had as a separate part and it is F7LZ-12A402-AA and it is listed at $17.37 and your cost is $13.03 each. On the mark it is usually the boot that degrades and on the LS it is the coil/boot assy that goes south.

tear into the engine...lol not! it easy...your coils are just on top like the heads are theres a plate that has bolts which you remove and whalla..your coils are just under that....i think i can fix this.....hehehe, read the other post i just replied to who has this same issue...just a word of advice..heat is the cause of these boots breakin down.and once the boot break...the coil goes it best to get it when u feel the car messin up..dont wait for it to go completly..i was told if you let it go too far...your infor trouble and your gonna see yourself diggin into ur pocket more deeper....

basicly...never go back to that dealer. and replace your coil overs.
