Hey everyone, I'm new to moding engines and such, so forgive me for being totally clueless about this. But I have a 1990 TC and it's my primary car, but I think im going to buy a new Passat soon, I want to know some things that I can do with my TC to make it... faster.

go look at the thread entitled "best go fast mod" :)

Someone has an '87 (?) Town Car w/ the same motor (of course) and they want 250 or so hp out of it.

Sixlitre, how much of an increase in hp and torque did you see with those mods?
How much of an improvement in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times did you see?

Those cars stock ran about a 17.5 in the 1/4, I saw that in the January 1990 Motor Trend when the TC was named COTY

How about 7mpg increase ?

I didn't do anything scientific to test the performance gains, suffice to say it's like day and night. The part throttle acceleration, off idle and up is now effortless, with a whole lot less pedal needing pressed.

The limiting factor is the sloppy factory transmission settings. You can feel a massive torque and power increase, but the shifts and shift points just kinda rob you of half of your gain.

Still, it's a whole lot quicker and better on gas than it was before. What's more the ignition parts needed are just slightly more than regular tune up parts would cost.

Hows about scanning me that 1990 article ? e-mail me at m_mhamilton@sympatico.ca regarding that.

Wow 7MPG improvement!

Was the AOD the best tranny to go into the 90-97 Town Cars? IIRC, the worst one was the one used from 1992-94, then in 95 they improved it.

I cant scan you the article, I have no scanner, sorry!

The AOD went into use IIRC in 1980 in cars and gained a poor rep as fairly weak. Ford made a lot of tweaks and improvements and kept it until 1993 IIRC.

Lentechautomatics.com rebuilds, actually re-engineers them to take 1100 horsepower and many people make kits to improve them.

My own experience has taught me that if you slap the largest cooler you can find on them and a $30 remote transmission oil filter housing on, they'll last forever. It helps to drop the fluid and change the internal filter every 12 months too.

I have almost 260,000 miles on my Bronco's original (never rebuilt)AOD and I beat the whee out of it all the time. I cannot say enough about the virtues of the remote trans filter on an AOD.

Personally I like the AOD because it's not electronic in any way. While the AOD is not a cheap trans to rebuild, it looks very affordable compared to the transmissions that followed IMHO.

p.s./
Take that article to work or to a neighbour and get them to scan it for you. I'd love to read it.
