I have a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII with 122,000 miles on the engine. My engine was tapping/knocking at idle but more louder at around 2500 rpm. So today I changed the oil and poured in some mobil 5w-20 oil with a mobile one filter. The tapping/knocking noise is quieter but I can still hear it more at around 2500 rpm. The engine idles smooth and still very powerful though. No change in performance. Should I be worried about this? What should i do?

tapping knocking where?
by cylinders 7 and 8? thats happens if you overheat it.
up front where the timing chairs are? the tensioners go bad sometimes.

5w 20 is now what Ford calls for the motors. Id still use 5w30 though considering thats what they were designed for.

Anywho diagnosing a sound online using a worded description is near impossible. "Coming from the top" is also missleading as sound travels and nobody can put their ear into the heart of a running motor.

Even a video clip can make the sound seem different.

So lets run through the possibilities.

B head motors do not seem to develop the tick C head motors are famous for. Very rarly would they develop the valve guide issue with #7&8. Not saying they cant, its just not common.

Hydraulic lash adjusters can fail and will cause a ticking type of sound at low RPMs.

Timing chain setup will make a knocking sound as tensioners fail, chain stretches and guides fail. It will sound like its from the top.

Rod knock is often "heard" from the top untill you put your ear near the oil pan.

Failing injectors can make a loud "ticking" noise that often has been described as "tapping".

There are other things as well but those are the most common.

That being said, timing chain guide is my guess.

I would suggest a mechanics stethoscope,
You can get them from any parts store for about $10

Both my old 93 mark viiis tick one tick worse then other beat both like a red headed step child sold both and I know that one is still out there kicking

here are some commas for you, you appear to have run out of them.

no charge, your welcome.

thanks for the advice. The knocking/tapping has quiet down alot lately. I barely hear it now. If it becomes louder, I'll have it checked out. Thanks Guys
