Well my 2000 LS V8 just went over 100k recently and now it has started making ticking noises. While driving up hills at low RPM it makes a mechanical ticking noise like the valves need adjusting. It only happen when the car is warmed up after about 15 minutes of driving. When it is colder the car is silent. I have looked at the secondary chain tensioners and they are fine. Yes I popped the valve covers off. With a stethoscope the engine sounds like a normal engine, no ticking.

It just sounds really bad under load, at low RPMs going up hills. Speed does not matter. If I put it in manual mode and drop to a lower gear to bring up the RPMs the sound pretty much goes away. When I get away from the hills I put it back in drive.

It really sounds mechanical and not like an air leak or exhaust tick.

Any ideas???

What octane gasoline are you using?
What oil are you using? How long and how far since the last oil change?

The 3.9 doesn't use hydraulic lifters, so your valve lash may need to be adjusted, but this would be rare.
