I'm looking for satellite radio, but hate the accessory brackets and such of aftermarket solutions. I would much prefer the factory look of the Sirius radios that Lincoln offers in the current LS. The head units are the same size (I don't think Lincoln has changed the interior center console in years) but what about the internals? I have the 6-CD changer Alpine system in now. What I want is this: http://www.lincoln.com/lincolnls/interiorfeatures.asp?feature=sirius_satellite_radio

Does anyone know if you can install a current-generation factory-replacement Sirius in a 2002 LSE? The dealer was no help, and their "radio warranty provider" (read: radio vendor) just says "no" without any explanations  . If the answer is no, I'd like to know what would be required to make it work. I don't mind spending $ on something that would look/sound right.

Thanks in advance.

Yes I have installed the factory sirius onto an 04 but if the 02 had the option I wouldnt see why...I dont believe they offered sirius new in 02 so I dont think your radio would have the correct setup to use the factory sirius tuner...You could try and find a newer factory radio and get the factory tuner/wiring and swap all that in...

Yeah, it was not an option in 02 thus the dealer and their vendors say it can't be done. I don't think I've explained it enough to those folks that I'm willing to replace the whole system, install a recevier in the truck or whereever and antenna and such - if you did that why couldn't this be done? If you replace everything, why wouldn't it work? Speakers are speakers...

Or do I have it wrong and you can only get Sirius with a head unit that has a Navigation System and thus more sensors and such? That may be the reason it is not compatible. The reason I bring that up is my searches have me reading about people that wish to activate the Sirius on thier Nav Systems, not much on the other way around.

I don't think you can update to the new radio.

Does this work for you??

That looks awesome, as close as someone will get to factory without, well, factory. Of course, no dealers around here will do that kind of custom craftsmanship. I'd have to find a customizer shop.

I still think it is possible to update to the newer radio, but it would take some work, more work than most are willing to do or assume I'd pay for.

All I had to do was remove the ashtray and get out Mr. Dremel and do a hachet job on the ash tray bracket. It took quite a bit of trim-and-check, but it wasn't too difficult. I'd give it a 1 on a 1-5 scale. The biggest thing you would need is patience. Well, you'd need a Dremel too....

Hey I sent a picture to Ken with a Sirius install. Maybe he can chime in if he still has it. Otherwise I'll send it to you when I get home.

Anything's possible, given enough money, but this is another one of those "if you're going to spend this much money, why don't you just go for a better aftermarket unit?" moments.

Sirius became a dealer-installed option in mid-'04, and there was a change in the wiring harness about that time (I'm not sure if that was the reason). As a result, not only can you not install a Sirius-ready factory head unit in an '02, you can't even install it in an '03 or early '04 without some work.

Thanks for the info about the years; those are hard to keep up with.

Question is, its a wiring harness. If a plug-n-play adapter does not fit, why is it so hard to wire directly? We used to install radios like that as the norm? Are there like other sensors and whatnot that the new head needs to see? I'm just kinda perplexed. I'm an engineer and I must know the whole story!

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what all is different; I haven't fooled with this myself, I'm just repeating the frustrations of someone I know who's fought with this issue (of the harness change). It may be something as simple as the connectors or a correct wiring diagram not being available for making an adapter harness, but I don't rightly know.

does it have to be sirius? there may be an xmdirect unit that works w/your car. you can check @ crutchfield.

The 04 and up radios have a SAT button on them. If you have that, it's ready for the factory Sirius kit. If you don't have it, it WILL NOT work. You cannot swap a SAT radio with the earlier model. The plug ins and wiring is different and I know of no adapters to make that swap. If it could be easily done, it would have been by now since that is pretty well how Ford has done it across the board with most models and EVERYONE wants to do this. Honestly guys...I know a lot of people who want to do this and to the best of my knowledge, nobody has figured it out.

Thanks for the input. I'm bummed that installing a satellite-ready, 2-DIN head + sat receiver for under $1000 is not really an option. All the singel DIN heads look like crap (in my opinion), and the ones with motorized screens block the other buttons/vents. LS4me's settup looks cool but (like everyone else in the 00-02 LS) I wanted an all-in-one solution.

I appreciate the input.

Take a closer look at the Pioneer AVIC-D1. Go look on eBay. There's a company called Barney's Electronics that will sell you a brand new one (not refurbished) for about $900. I have bought from them in the past and they were a good company to deal with. That should meet your price range and it's a heck of a unit. Ask Joey!!

Another related Sirius question/solution with the '02 LS. Because of the situation mentioned above, I'm looking to install a portable Sirius unit that I can also use in my house so I'm interested in installing an aux input for Sirius and iPod applications such as the one made by PAC. I have the same situation mentioned above with the factory Alpine Audiophile system with the in-dash 6-disk cd and rear subs etc. Is is possible to install one of the PAC units with this system without interfering with the operation of the 6 disk changer. In other words, is there an aux input available in this HU with the proper harness?

Thanks

By the way... I do NOT want to use the Sirius unit with RF transmission to pick up Sirius in my HU. When traveling these do not work very well.

I used this adapter and it works great. Once installed, pressing the CD button twice changes the mode to "DJ" which is the Sirius unit.

I have a similar set up in my LS. It will provide CD quality sound unlike RF modulation.

Hey Ken, can you post the pic I sent of my temp install? I'm at work and don't have it here.

The P.I.E. looks like the way to go. It looks exactly like the PAC.

Do you have the Audiophile in-dash 6 disk as well? How difficult is this to install? Where/how to you take the +12v from? I'd like to use the iPod interface (UII) that works with it as well.

Yeah I have the Audiophile in-dsh 6. The install is very easy and I just used the 12v from the stereo wiring harness. I don't rember what color wire.

No the one with the sirius unit actually installed in the ashtray area.
I don't have that one loaded in the customer car gallery.
