Last night I was messing around with my stereo and decided to check in the truck because I didn't notice much bass. So I did a quick check on the sub and heard no sound. I unplugged the harness going out and no change. I then unplugged harness coming in and no change. My question is how can I tell if the amp is bad or the sub is blown? TIA

You can hold 3 and 6 on the radio and it'll do a speaker diag check that tells if the speakers work or not. Thats if you have the stock head unit!!! :Beer

Well I just went outside and tried doing that and nothing happened. I held 3 and 6 buttons together w/radio on and w/radio off. I also tried w/key on and w/key off. Is there a specific order I need to do this in?

do you have the audiopile system with the speakers in the trunk or 'are" your speakers in your rear doors?

The check shoudl work.. You have the radio on, with SOUND.. pick a random station.. then press and hold 3 and 6 at the same time.. it shoudl work

I have speakers in the rear doors and I also have what looks like 6x9 speaker covers on the rear deck w/an amp under the deck w/a black venting system?

hmm.. i dont have speakers in my rear deck, I believe you haev teh audiopile system.. you may want to look in the manual i believe it shows you how to do the speaker diag test.. Have you ever heard sound out of there?

You know I'm not exactly sure. It is def. for the sub because if I look through the grills I don't see any speakers so I'm assuming its for the sound to come out? Under the rear deck where the amp is there is like this big black enclosure mounted there w/what looks like ports.

Someone will correct me if i am wrong, but i'm not exactly sure every audiopile system came with the subs... I think it was an extra option, that or someone took them out before you got the car..

Well everything I see leads me to believe that there are subs in there because of the amp and the enclosure. I would think if someone took out the subs they would've taken the enclosure out as well? Getting back to that test if I do it and it works it might not help me because if no sound comes out( which I think I've already determined )it is either the amp or the subs themselves. So I need to know how to test both amp and sub individually? Sorry for being a PITA.

You can check for voice coil damage by checking the DC resistance of the speaker with your multimeter. If it's toast, it'll read open (very high resistance) or shorted (no resistance). I don't know the nominal impedance of the stock drivers in your enclosure, but I'mm assuming they're somewhere between 4 and 8 ohms. Anything below 4 ohms or above 16 ohms would be suspicious.

TOO technical for me I think I'll take out the unit and look at it first.

well if you want to just check your amp then the DC meter should read well under 1V if your amp is OK.
try that!!
