Well, I noticed a drip on my driveway coming from what I thought was the power steering pump. Upon further investigation I discovered that it was coming from the hydraulic pump for the fan. My first thought was that the pump had gone bad, however I discovered that the hose that comes out from underneath the pump was loose. The fitting is torked in as tight as it will go, and it is still loose. Looks like I need to get a new hose assembly. Has anyone replaced this hose? Did I read somewhere about needing to pull a vacuum on the system in order to fill it up with fluid again?

Anyway, makes me wonder how many people have taken it to the dealer and been charged for a new pump when it was only the hose.

Here is a thread that will save you a half day of work:

I have replaced that hose twice now - the bracket the holds it tight to the engine breaks then the weight of the hose dangling finally wears out the seal and you get a leak. the hose is apparently 1300psi - so once it starts to leak - it only get worst - fast.

The hose is only $52.

Thanks Quik LS.
You replaced it twice? Thanks for the heads-up.
I think I will tie the new hose up anywhere I can to take the weight off it.

My bracket is still in place but the hose is still loose.

That fitting that connects the hose to the pump wasn't 22 mm like the link said. For mine it was 3/4" (19mm was slightly too big). I could get to it by going straight up and using a "crowfoot".

What about pulling a vacuum? Or did you just refill the reservoir and everything worked fine?

P.S. You weren't Quik SC over on SCCOA were you?

I did. I used a brake bleeder vacuum gizmo i have, wound a big ball of tape around the little hose - so it made a 'seal' in the cap hole.

Nope - but funny you mention it - I have been spending alot of time there reading about the plenum vacuum lines and issue they are having (or not having) with the supercharger setups - since I'm going to be using a SC T-bird setup on my LS.

Dealer quoted $400.00 to put in the hose including the part.

Looks like I will be doing it myself. Ordered the hose for $63.00.
The only thing at this point I don't quite understand is pulling that vacuum. I have ordered a Ford CD and that should help me.

What kind of vacuum gizmo should I buy?
Is there one designed for this pupose?
(I would rather spend my money on tools to make the job easier than give it to the dealer).

I just purchased a vacuum brake bleeder set from AutoZone - like $30. I took the reservoir cap off and put the vacuum line in it. To make a seal - I just took some tape - and wound it around and around the hose - until it was built up enough to snuggly fit into the top of the reservoir.
