01V6 changed the valve cover gaskets around 95k miles 6 years ago. This week engine was missing so I pulled a cop on the drivers side. Oil, lots of oil. Pulled the other cops, more oil. The cop rubber boots had split and were soft from sitting in the hot oil. So today I have 169k miles. That's about 75k miles on the gaskets. I found the outside edge gasket still pliable and easy to remove. The inner gasket around the plugs was hard as a rock. The rubber had turned into a hard plastic. It broke into pieces when removed. No flex left, all hard and tinsel like. I wonder why the difference between the inner and outer gasket? They are a different color, so maybe made with a different compound?

Or, it could be the that inner got hotter than the outer...

I would have to agree, the inners are directly above that wonderful explosion of the internal combustion engine. Also the outers do have more ability to cool with air moving around the outside of the motor.

Interesting ideas. Yep tried to install the old head temp sensor and it broke off right at the end of the thrreads! Damn! Had to remove the valve cover again to use a drill and easy out to remove the threads. New sensor $32 Napa. Reinstall valve cover yet again. After 15 years the plastic connectors to the cops and wire harness are starting to breakdown.

Lol, had that exact problem last weekend with the cht sensor. That's one part I'm afraid to torque to spec. And I definately noticed the inner spark plug gasket IS made of different material than the outter. Atleast it is with the fel-pro set. My inner gaskets weren't crumbling, but we're pretty hard and baked on also, though not the outters.

I was able to get the remaining threads out without removing the valve cover again..luckily
