There is still hope for America after all.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House on Wednesday approved a constitutional amendment that would give Congress the power to ban desecration of the American flag, a measure rejected twice by the Senate in the past decade but expected to get a closer vote this year.

By a 286-130 vote - eight more than needed - House members approved the amendment by the required two-thirds majority after a debate over whether such a ban would run afoul of the Constitution's free-speech protections.

If approved by a similar two-thirds majority in the Senate, the amendment would then move to the states for ratification. It would have to be approved by three-fourths, or 38, of the 50 state legislatures to become the 28th amendment to the Constitution. Sixty-three senators, four short of two-thirds needed, voted for the amendment in 1995 and again in 2000. With Republicans increasing their majority in last fall's election, activists on both sides of the issue said the amendment has its pass chance ever of passing this year. But a rough count by The Associated Press shows 34 - one more than needed to defeat it - either as having voted against the amendment in the past or committed publicly to opposing it.

There is still hope for America after all.

You can say that again. I can understand disliking the president, or maybe some other influential American. But come on, under no circumstances should you burn the Amercian Flag. That's something you see at terrorist camps. Just because you don't like the government doesn't mean you go out and burn the Flag like a terrorist son of a b!tch. To anyone out there who opposes this potential amendment, here's a great link. http://www.big-boys.com/articles/pricelessterrorist.html

:soapbox:

If i see anyone burning our flag he is going to get his ass kicked!!!!!

Bah!! I agree, it is not neccessary to burn the flag, but making it law is terrible. We all love this country, but the more freedoms we compromise, the more governments can justify taking away.

By the way, i thought you were supposed to burn it, if it touches the ground.

I too, have trouble with making a specific law. I think it's dispicable for someone to do such a thing, protest or not, but do we really need another tightening of government control?

Does the guy at the stadium that doesn't stand for the National Anthem get arrested next?

Seems all too much like history repeating itself.

I'm not into government control of anything so I am therefore not in favor of this amendment, but, on the other hand, I support it. Too many people have suffered and died to give us the freedoms we all enjoy and if making the flag a sacred symbol (much like the Koran is supposed to be) and that in turn makes people respect it, than I say this is good policy. We all need to stick together. Supporting the flag I think serves that purpose.

:iconcur: This is more about pride and respect than control. Also, standing during the national anthem couldn't be made a law. It could be considered discrimination againts parapalegics.
