hey guys im new to the site. i am currently in the process of replacing all of my plastic parts and hoses. but i have one question, do i need to use any sealant between the plastic elbow that's underneath the Intake Manifold (9N499) and the main plastic body (8548A)? it just seems like the large O ring alone would leak coolant eventually...i have taken out the intake manifold and put new gaskets and the hose that runs underneath. but now i have to attach the plasic elbow to the main plastic body and i dont wanna have to do it all again if possible. any help would be awesome

i have a 2003 v8 3.9 btw

I'm showing #8A504 for your coolant outlet pipe. That part 8548,you mentioned shows in my book for a 6 cyl. The text shows no notation to use gasket sealer. That stuff can cause problems in it gets to your radiator and plugs fins,or your heater radiators. don-ohio :)^)

The elbow you are talking about might be the return hose for the throttle body that's the only hose I can see running not under but behind near the firewall. On my 3.9
But I may be wrong.

thank you Don Ohio. i have the 8 cyl but we're still probably talking about the same part really

The elbow part is what the coolant outlet pipe bolts to. It is part#8005 in my book. Again I see no need to use sealant. All parts must be FoMoCo (motorcraft). don-ohio :)^)

Yea, I wouldn't use sealant. It's too close to the block for my liking. Given I've replaced mine.

The sealant isn't required but if you decide to use it anyway, use Ultra Copper silicone and keep it outside the gasket circle. The seal itself is designed to be squashed into the groove cut into the plastic, and clamping pressure puts a pressure seal between the parts.

do not use any other sealant.

while "eventually" every seal will probably fail, O rings have been used alone to make great seals for decades. just make sure to put it together carefully so that the O ring is in its proper place and doesn't get damaged.

Don't use sealant! Do use some lubricant (dielectric grease or maybe silicon). The lubricant keeps the o-ring from getting twisted, which would cause a leak.

"8548" is a Ford base part number. It is used in nearly every car they make for a similar function, but it is a very different part on each car. You need the full part number before you can begin to say it is for a six cylinder or an eight cylinder or even an LS.

Okay,I thank you for that,Joe. I have been going by the pics in the book and they are accurate for the Gen II. don-ohio :)^)
