Hello boys n' girls, today I had the un-enviable chore of removing the fuel pump from my '00 LS. The pump wasn't working even though it had juice and ground. I removed it from the tank and applied current as a bench test. On the first two trys it just sat there, but on the third and all subsequent attempts it worked. Re-installed, and it works fine. It may crap out entirely later, but for now...

Now the real subject of this post, the dreaded retaining ring!
I tried for close to two hours to get that ring to thread on squarely. Every time I thought I had it, it turned out to be cock-eyed. The frustration was unbelievable.
Finally I got a bright idea- I put the ring in a pot of boiling water for about five minutes, took the ring, pot and all out to the car, took it out with some pliers and PRESTO!! The ring spun on at the first try! I couldn't believe it, so I took it off and re-installed it two more times!
I hope this helps at least one of y'all out

Regards,
M.R.
