I just noticed something today while at the pump. Because the gas cap is tethered to the car it falls and hits the same spot which has produced fine scratches right below the filler door. This is rather annoying and seems unnecessary. I like Chryslers because they have a little lip in the door that will hold the cap while its out. So now if i decide(and probably will) to cut the plastic tether i have to find someplace to put the cap that i wont drive off and forget. Does anybody else have alot of wear from the gas cap ?

mine has a little (NIPPLE) stud whatever sticking out the the end of the cap slides over and sits there! Am I crazy of am I the only one with this? If I think about it I will snap a picture of it in the morning (batterys are charging)

I just snapped this. You can clearly see the scratches. I dont have any "nipple" on mine. There is no place to put it that it wont get in the way of the gas pump. STUPID FoMoCO !

Don't cut if off. MODIFY and IMPROVE! Figure out some way to attach a small hook, or nipple or something to hang the tether over or sit the gas cap on.

Then, write a tech article with good instructions and pics and post it!

Then have a company mass produce them. Start selling them on LVC and eBay. Move up to the Home Shopping Network and QVC.
Have them mass produced in a third world country for pennies.
Retire and spend your time between your Malibu Beach House, your New York penthouse, and your Chalet in the mountains.

If you think about it, that sounds much better than cutting the tether doesn't it?

Very well thought out :Beer
That brings me to another issue, the damn tether isnt long enough to do any kind of mount to the filler door, where it should go!! Its just long enough to dangle down and scratch the paint on my $34,000 car. Sometimes i think that the engineers were snickering in some boardroom about crap like that. I mean, you can put heated and cooled seats in a car but you cant keep the damn gas cap from scratching the paint ?? Too smart to do any good i guess.

LOL I agree..... It was my s10 that had the nipple and my girlfriends saturn sl2 97 has a little plastic cup that holds it!!!! WTF cant lincoln do something

I agree with everyone on this. But let me just say this has to be one of the funniest threads. Everyones replies are hilarious. Im gonna look at mine this weekend and try to figure something out.

FLA02LS, man you don't clean your car or what, how come that part is so dirty.. And for the scratches, when you remove the cap don't drop it, just put it down really slowly and carefully so it won't scratch your car. My LS has over 97000miles, it's 01 and I fill up almost every day and I don't have a single scratch in that area and at all.

Yeah, the car is really dirty right now and that gas door area is really nasty looking. It usually gets washed every weekend but i've been traveling alot and i've been sick, so its been a good two weeks since being washed. I have only had the car a few months now and i noticed it when i got it. I tried some rubbing compound but it didnt do much. My car was a lease turn in so i am sure whoever owned it didnt care about the cap tearing up the paint. I do place it very down gently now, but with the car being black every little slight scratch sticks out. Also whoever used to wax or wash it left all kinds of swirl marks that show when the light hits it right.
