ok so every time I put gas in my car i would get 93 octane from an independent gas station and it's always been the same place, i've never filled up anywhere else. i would fill the tank and the car would say 220miles to empty.

Today I went to a Shell station b/c i've read they sell top tier gasoline, i filled up a tank of 93 costing me about $50. i get into my car and now it says 330miles till empty. i thought this was really weird.

can the car sense it is better gas or something and i would get better mpg? is it a computing error? hrm..

to my knowledge, the type of gas you put in there would not make a bit of difference on the miles till empty factor.

Agreed, the mileage calculates overall, not at fill up. The only way to reset the MPG calculator is to disconnect the battery for a few hours.

Yeah that is weird. The mpg/mte calculator uses the last tankful average to figure out how many miles you have in your new tank so the type gas won't affect the caluclated mileage right at the start. Maybe after a tankful you might find a difference. I sometimes see a variation of 1 or 2mpg when I flip between 91, 89 and 87 gas, depending on my cheapness and experimenting.

What might be causing the difference is some pumps will shut off sooner than others and you will not have as much actual gas in the tank at one versus another. So depending on how high the tank float sits, the extra gas actually pumped in will result in a different miles to empty. I go to one station where I can consistently get 1 or two more gallons in the tank than another station's pumps allow.

If you keep a vehicle log you can check to see how many gallons you actually put in and also calcualte mileage based upon actual gallons.

But a difference of over 100 miles is quite a lot of gas.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Mine usually says 300-330, isnt that normal? middle to 3/4 is when i see 200 miles till empty... is mine messed up?

330 is what my message will say after filling up. The computer will estimate your miles depending on driving conditions. If I am cruising at 55 MPH, I have better economy than at 90 MPH.

i would fill the tank and the car would say 220miles to empty

STOP FLOORING UR CAR ALL THE DAMN TIME!!! YOUR CAR SHOULD BE GETTING OVER 300MILES A TANK!! HOWEVER YOU DRIVE IT LIKE YOU HATE AND YOUR AVERAGING 220Miles. The Miles to empty is calculated by your driving habits. Think im being a prick? check this out...

Before i blew my motor i would average 210miles per tank. Now I get about 350...

when i got the car and first filled it up it said 220. it was like that when i got that. and of course having a new car a lot more powerful then my old ride i was playing around but now im down to normal driving habits so maybe that's it, i dunno.

Yeah, thats prob it, if i remember correctly, it takes about 3 tanks for the computer to adjust to your driving habits.
