is it necessary to replace in pairs? like, a 1st gen on right front, a 2nd gen on left front - would that pose a problem.

Usally if one is dead second one is going to die soon its smarter to just replace them both and save yourself a headache. as to if it would work im sure it would might ride a little weird since one is worn out and one is new but it would work but I wouldn't recommend it.
