the passenger front headlight is out on my 97 mk vIII. called around and found out can't get them. is there a good place to get used parts? is there a way to check and see if ballast is bad? or bulb? or do i need to replace the whole headlight assy? it looked to me like i would have to take the top of the grill off to even get at the headlights. any help would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks

The bulb is obsolete. You can get retrofit adapters from DLF or Kustomizing Kid here on the board and then get one of the aftermarket HID kits that will then work. You could go used, but then you have no idea how long it will last. Also, do a search and you will find a lot of options and opinions.

Buy any decent 9006 HID kit. They fit the hole in the headlight assembly perfectly and seal up nice with their o-ring. Then use thin gauge wire (I used aircraft safety wire) tied back and forth around the three bolts that hold the HID. Rock solid. No $250 adapter kit to buy. Any questions on wiring PM me.

One other thing, if you don't run the new ballasts off a relay, your auto headlights will not work. You'll get a check head lamps message. All you have to do is turn them manually to ON and they will fire. Its the voltage drop from starting the motor that causes the issue.

to test, plug the suspect bad bulb into the known good ballast...its pretty simple

If only one bulb is out, the ballast is good. The options are to convert or pay $100+ for an obsolete bulb.

Even stock, there are seperate ballasts for each side, so that's not necessarily true.

However, it is more likely that it's the bulb.
